Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting Read The vivid imagery evoked by the author's words bring to life the horrific events of the Halifax Explosion. The conflict that Hilda feels between looking for her family and getting help for herself is a central theme and we are led to understand how a young adult might have felt as her world was destroyed. Very much worth reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I felt like I was there! I am Hilda Burrows by Sharon Gibson Palermo is a realistic portrayal of the immediate emotional, physical, and psychological aftermath of a horrific event. The author's focus on one young girl, as she gradually grasps the implications of what has happened, allows the reader to experience the moments after the Halifax Explosion along with Hilda. We are caught up in the same confusion, and the same desperate need to know about her family. The story does not spare the reader; true depictions of human mutilation will allow young readers to glimpse the power and tragic consequences of the historic event. Parents and teachers will find lots to talk about with young readers - from the historic details, to the many acts of human kindness, to Hilda's ability to overlook her nudity in her desperate efforts to rescue a survivor. A thoroughly gripping read and a story that enlightens the young reader about a significant event in Canadian history.
