A MEMOIR BY THE YOUNGEST RECIPIENT OF THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE

"I come from a country that was created at midnight. When I almost died it was just after midday."

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she became a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I AM MALALAis the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I AM MALALAwill make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.
Malala Yousafzai, the educational campaigner from Swat Valley, Pakistan, came to public attention by writing for BBC Urdu about life under the Taliban. Using the pen name Gul Makai, she often spoke about her family's fight for girls' education in her community. In October 2012, Malala was targeted by the Taliban and shot in the head as ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspirational This is an excellent real account of the struggles and triumphs of Malala. I have shared parts of the novel with my classes and we also watch her Noble Peace Prize speech. Malala is a true inspiration in a world of inequality and hate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wow. The book was alright, when you hear speak it is a lot easier to follow alone. Some parts of the book is hard to follow along without being distracted. This is not to discourage her story because she is incredibly strong and brave, I would rather listen to her speak than read it..

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Malala the Brave I was very interested to read this book because I think Malala herself seems like a pretty amazing, accomplished person. Unfortunately I did not like her book very much. In parts it reads as a really dry, boring history of Pakistan, and there’s a lot of who’s who that I didn’t really care about. I liked the parts when she talked about the things she liked to do - reading Twilight, watching Ugly Betty. I enjoyed that she used words and phrases in Urdu or Pashto but also includes the english words. Theres also a glossary in the back with the words. This book would have been so much more interesting if it had been written years after her shooting, I would have liked to read about all she's accomplished since then.

She is so inspiring and so brave. The style of the way it was written was a little different from what I expected, but it works to get her story across.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 2 stars for the writing, not the story This is a case where I wanted to *love* the book. Malala inspires me - she's an amazing and brave woman! And her story is worth telling. I just didn't enjoy the structure and writing in her memoir. It was a bit flat and boring... Everyone seems to love it so I'll say, give it a shot!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bold and Brave The world has become a small place due to the internet and the ease of worldwide travel. It's so important to be educated in culture and religion to be mindful and respectful of other people in the world. This novel is written well despite English not being Malala first language. Her life experience is important for everyone to know. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone Should Read This Book..... I say, everyone, because no matter whether you are female or male, education IS important! In North America we take the gift of education for granted when others like, Malala faced death in her country just because she desired education! The assassination attempt because of her beliefs and her struggles in this true life story seem like fiction but in fact it was real! Well written and highly recommended for people of all ages! What a brave young lady - my heart goes out to her!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I didn't expect to like this... ...but I actually learned a few things from it that I think are important to know. The tone is really young, like a YA novel, and I think we're missing something politically from not having it told by an adult, but Malala and the woman journalist who helped her write this do a good job of detailing some of the conditions that gave rise to the Taliban nonetheless. It's impossible not to feel for Malala, who went through such a horrible ordeal not out of a desire to be political, but simply out of an interest in learning. It is important to note, however, that Malala makes a distinction between what happens in her province of KPK in Pakistan, and how life is in the major cities. For people that will read this book and make assumptions about the whole of Pakistan, please understand that just like there's a difference between North Bay and Toronto, there are other countries (imagine!) where regional/ethnic/class particularities make it difficult to understand an entire nation through one specific narrative. My mother, for example, is Pakistani and was admitted into a Master's program there in the '70s. My grandfather's aunt had a Master's degree in English Literature in India. One of my female cousins currently has an MD and an MBA and works in hospital management. There's a huge difference between rural/city and wealthy/not-so-much in countries like India and Pakistan, and even, if we're honest, in the West.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't be afraid, pick it up and read it. To be frank, I was a little leery about reading this book. I anticipated being disappointed by a book written (albeit with help) by a teenager. While I expected the book to be quite inspirational (which it is), I was surprised by just how informative it is regarding the life of the Pashtun people in the Swat Valley. Sometimes, we sit in our living rooms watching the news and we think to ourselves "those people must be out of their minds to accept a form a leadership that flies in the face of democracy or to invite a form of law that significantly restricts peoples rights". But Malala, in explaining the realities of the history and culture of her people, gives us some straightforward answers to why things are the way they are in Pakistan. And through it all she never gives up her religion or beliefs in the education of all children. An amazing story of an amazing person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Her Journey & Struggles have brought me to tears ... Malala; what an inspirational young woman. Her journey & struggles have brought me to tears. Such a strong, confident and courageous girl. She fights for the right to an education, which so many take for granted. Subject to a heinous attack by the Taliban, she miraculously survives, and is able to tell her story while the world listens. I admire Malala's passion and determination as she continues her fight for the basic right of an education for all children across the globe. I am so very fortunate to have been born into a country of social equality, freedom of thought and most important: where education is the birthright of every child.
