From Our Editors
Ellis Island -- a place where inexplicable joy mixes with terrible homesickness in the hearts of many immigrants from around the world. What were some of their first impressions? Arriving empty-handed, how did many of these young hopefuls cope? Author Veronica Lawlor compiles the memories of a variety of people who passed through Ellis Island between 1900 and 1925 in I Was Dreaming to Come to America.
"Whatever the circumstances, each vignette reflects a strong sense of hope. Lawlor's handpainted paper collages are equally powerful."--Publisher's Weekly
"This is an affecting little book that should help all of us remember the grit and hope that formed our nation."--Children's Literature
