Introduction by Gillian Flynn • Afterword by Patton Oswalt

“A brilliant genre-buster.... Propulsive, can’t-stop-now reading.”   —Stephen King

For more than ten years, a mysterious and violent predator committed fifty sexual assaults in Northern California before moving south, where he perpetrated ten sadistic murders. Then he disappeared, eluding capture by multiple police forces and some of the best detectives in the area.

Three decades later, Michelle McNamara, a true crime journalist who created the popular website TrueCrimeDiary.com, was determined to find the violent psychopath she called "the Golden State Killer." Michelle pored over police reports, interviewed victims, and embedded herself in the online communities that were as obsessed with the case as she was.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark—the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death—offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman’s obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth. Utterly original and compelling, it has been hailed as a modern true crime classic—one which fulfilled Michelle's dream: helping unmask the Golden State Killer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Interesting! If you're into true crime, if you've heard about the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer then this is the book for you. Michelle delves in quite deep into the horrific crimes committed 40 years ago. This book covers so many interesting points you might have never heard about. Sadly the author passed away before completing the book, and before the killer got caught this year (hooray to the latter!).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read! This book is amazing. I picked it up because I was mildly curious about the content I needed something for the week. I could not put it down. The author writes beautifully and ties together a well put together narrative. Often I find that the authors or narrators of crime stories get bogged in the details. I find myself struggling to keep up with all the information. McNamara weaves together the details of the case so well that it wasn't a struggle to keep up at all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed it! I definitely enjoyed the read, despite the heavy topic and graphic picture that was painted. This inevitably haunted some of my dreams. Truly well written, and her commitment to understanding every aspect of the EAR is remarkable. Again, despite the graphic content, it was an easy read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this! I'm a bit of a book snob, and I didn't want to put this book down. It's unfortunate that Michelle has passed before her book made it to print, she did a phenomenal job.
