about

An enormously popular (7-million copies sold) and insightful classic of popular psychology based on Eric Berne’s theory of Transactional Analysis that has helped millions of people who never before felt OK about themselves find the freedom to change, to liberate their ADULT effectiveness, and to achieve joyful intimacy with the people in their lives.

Transactional analysis delineates three ego-states (parent, adult and child) as the basis for the content and quality of interpersonal communication. “Happy childhood” notwithstanding, says Harris, most of us are living out the not ok feelings of a defenseless child wholly dependent on ok others (parents) for stroking and caring. At some stage early in our lives we adopt a “position” about ourselves which very significantly determines how we feel about ourselves, particularly in relation to other people. And for a huge portion of the population, that position is that I’m Not OK-You’re OK. This negative Life Position, shared by successful and unsuccessful people alike, contaminates our rational adult potential, leaving us vulnerable to the inappropriate, emotional reactions of our child and the uncritically learned behavior programmed into our parent. By exploring the four basic “life positions,” we can radically change our lives.

The lateThomas Harriswas a Navy psychiatrist and a professor at the University of Arkansas. He practiced psychiatry in Sacramento, California and directed the Transactional Analysis Association.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So relevant ! I feel so true. We are all human beings and more alike than different. Bought two book because my husband always wanted to read it and felt his sister might benefit from a copy as well. Within the first chapter or so my husband finally got something I had been telling him for years but he never believed me. That every child in a large family has  different experiences depending on when they were born during the parents life and the environment in which the parents were living at the time. Each child is never treated the same despite best efforts. Life is always happening and shaping everyone's perceptions and actions, like it or not. This book I feel is a course in how to live a happy, fulfilling life with little or no baggage as all will make sense to you as it is explained. I feel it should be taught as a life skill course to children both in primary school and then later in high school. It is an easy read but full of essential information so that one can become a lot more self aware as well as more understanding and empathetic towards others. Every person on earth should read and fully understand this book. The world would be a much better place to live in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One Of The Most Important Books I was in a very bad place in my life....after getting married and living 16,000 klms away from all of my family and friends. I needed to network and get myself someone to talk to. In doing so I connected with Jim Thiedeman R.T.AAMT and Sharon Gambly R.D.T.R.T of the Womens Well being Groups and Mens Well Being Groups in Brisbane . In their teaching of holistic healing from Traumatic experiences and devistaion in families and other life altering experiences...well can I say...it was definitely the best thing I could have done. I am in the proccess of traing to become a facilitator to teach others what I have learned and will continue to learn. Part of our training consists of reading to understand our thoughts and why we think them and how to change them. Reading Thomas A Harris's book "I'm Ok You're Ok" really has opened my eyes and my mind to how we have all been dumbed down by society and we need to make change in our lives to be healthy, emotionally, physically, and mentally to be happy. I so look forward to reading other books of Thomas A Harris and teaching everything that Jim Thiedeman Inc. and Sharon Gambly have taught. It is amazing and all common sence. My life has changed dramatically and will continue to do so....I am looking forward to everything life has to offer me and throw at me. I've got it !!!

Editorial Reviews

"It's easy to relate to I'm OK-You're OK. Again and again the reader will find his own predicament staring up at him from the page, along with its message, "If you don't like the trap, you can change it." (Cleveland Press)
