about

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

What should be a cozy and fun-filled weekend deep in the English countryside takes a sinister turn in Ruth Ware’s suspenseful, compulsive, and darkly twisted psychological thriller.

Sometimes the only thing to fear...is yourself.

When reclusive writer Leonora is invited to a hen party in an eerie glass house deep in the English countryside, she reluctantly agrees to make the trip. But as the first night falls, revelations unfold among friends old and new and a haunting realization creeps in—they are not alone in the woods.

Forty-eight hours later, Nora wakes up in a hospital bed injured but alive, with the knowledge that someone is dead. Wondering not “what happened?” but “what have I done?” she tries to piece together the events of the past weekend. Working to uncover secrets, reveal motives, and find answers, Nora must revisit parts of herself that she would much rather leave buried where they belong: in the past.
Ruth Ware grew up in Lewes, in Sussex. After graduating from Manchester University she moved to Paris, before settling in North London. She has worked as a waitress, a bookseller, a teacher of English as a foreign language and a press officer. In a Dark, Dark Wood is her début thriller.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! This is the Second Ruth Ware I've read. Though I loved her writing in The Lying Game, this one wasn't my favorite. A nice short(ish) read! The story seemed very slow going initially but as we got more into it I did see how the back ground details she provided really went into the story! Definitely full of suspense and twists! so even though it isn't one of my new favs, I did enjoy it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suspenseful! It took me a while to sit down and read this novel, but I'm very glad I did! I wasn't too impressed with the ending, but the overall book was a great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! I loved this! Such a page turner and I couldn't put it down. Very creepy while reading at night. A great thriller

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed!! I had really high hopes for this book since I read and loved Woman in Cabin 10, also by Ruth Ware, but I was sadly disappointed. I like my thrillers to have lots of twist and turns, something that is going to keep me intrigued but this novel was none of that. In fact I found it to be boring and dragged on with no major plot twist. (This review was originally posted on my goodreads account.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I could not put this book down!! Another great book by Ruth Ware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love This Book I love this book for so many reasons. Ruth just has a way of writing that draws the reader in and then totally shocks them with the twists and turns she places throughout the book. I can't get enough of her books!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved It! I actually read all of Ruth Ware's books in reverse order. I recommend them all! I think this one is my favourite of the three. It was a real page turner. Looking forward to her new one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read This was the first Ruth Ware book that I read and I was an instant fan. As soon as I finished I thought this book NEEDS to be made into a movie so we can see it come to life. I'm glad to hear that it is actually in the works! If you liked this one, I would recommend The Woman in Cabin 10 as well which I just finished and also loved. Her style of writing is excellent and unpredictable. I will definitely pick up the Lying Game next.
Date published: 2018-02-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent read I thought this was an excellent suspense / psychological thriller. The ending is unexpected! This should be made into a movie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Creepy must read I am an avid suspense/thriller reader. I first read Ruth Ware's second book, The Woman in Cabin 10, and LOVED it. So I picked up In a Dark, Dark Wood. OMG it was so suspenseful! And the creep factor started from the opening chapter. I could NOT put this down. I've since heard this story is being made into a movie by Reese Witherspoon's production company. I can understand why as it's a gripping tale. Be sure to read this before the movie comes out!!!

Date published: 2018-01-29
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad This book was definitely better than The woman in Cabin 10 which I picked up and read first. Over all it was fast paced and kept me interested until the end. Quick, easy read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read!!!! Was a really good book. The starting was a little slow but it picked up within a few chapters. Great storyline and the ending was not what i expected. Stayed up late into the night reading cause i couldnt put it down lol

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ending was great This book started off slow for me. However, I understand why - the author was really trying to build a good background to the characters and the plot. The climax of the story was right near the end and man it was a good one! I really liked the book because of the suspenseful ending but wouldn't say I loved it as I had to force myself through the first few chapters.
Date published: 2018-01-27
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unputdownable Definitely a quick read, but the ending is a little disappointing. Unlikable characters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This author is my new favourite! After reading and loving The Girl in Cabin 10, I came across this Ruth Ware book and it did not disappoint! A good suspense novel, but I had read reviews and was expecting scary- I did not find it at all scary, but definitely full of suspense and mystery

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it as much as I did, but it was a total page turner. DID NOT expect the ending!
Date published: 2017-11-20
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best Horrifying Setting Ever I am not usually one for descriptive details, but Ruth Ware has mastered the art of creating a truly creepy locale for this page-turner. This offering reads like the scariest ghost story you remember from your childhood campfires. Without the ghosts.
Date published: 2017-11-19
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was ok Couldn't identify with the characters. Hard to believe these are adults behaving and acting this way. A little unrealistic for me. Takes a while to get used to the British slang.
Date published: 2017-11-13
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Steadily scary! I am a big thriller fan and this kept the suspense going from the very beginning with the email, the drive, the woods, the running and right down to the end of her visit in the hospital! You never know what is going on and there was twist after twist after twist. I tend to be quite good at seeing what is coming at the end of a book from having read so many, but with this one I had no idea!
Date published: 2017-10-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Not the best thriller, but it was a quick, fun read.
Date published: 2017-10-17
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't care for it To be fair, I read this after reading Gone Girl and Girl on a Train. It was a slow start, and what I deemed to be unnecessary. It was a little predictable and not at all as suspenseful as it was made out to be. Not bad, but definitely not great.
Date published: 2017-10-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from one of her best Ruth is always a treat to read, and this book met all expectations

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Slow start but worth the wait! I read this book over a span of 48 hours...once it got going I couldn't put it down. Fantastic characters and a great plot, I really enjoyed Ruth Ware's writing style.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I read Ruth Ware's Women in Cabin 10 first and absolutely loved it, so I figured why not try this one as well. I was not disappointed. I couldn't put the book down and it ended in a way I did not expect. She is a great author, definitely check her out!
Date published: 2017-10-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok I couldn't put this book down. There is always something going on that keeps you reading
Date published: 2017-10-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good I found this an interesting read...clever, captivating. Moved along at a fair clip, not too fast or too slow. Entertaining cast of characters. Fun read, kept you guessing.
Date published: 2017-10-03
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow start but worth it! I must agree with many other reviews that the beginning of this book does start out slowing takes awhile to get exciting, but it was important to get all of the details in the slow boring part to truly understand what was happening in the exciting part. I had a feeling how the book would end but it was more of a feeling I had, not because the book was obvious at all. I really enjoyed the Woman in Cabin 10 and this one, looking forward to more form Ruth Ware! HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Date published: 2017-10-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent read Slow and draggy to start but does pick up pace. Not overly fast paced at any point though not not a total disaster.
Date published: 2017-09-28
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Slightly Boring I picked up this book with high hopes as there were some very good reviews. I wanted a book that was going to have me on the edge of my seat--a real page turner. But I was disappointed in how long this book took to get anywhere. 150 pages in and I still felt like barely anything happened. Finally, when the plot started to twist, it was slightly intriguing, but by no means scary. I gave this book 2 stars because unfortunately it was only the last 50 pages that were exciting. If you want a real page-turning scary novel, its not this one.
Date published: 2017-09-26
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very different from what I was expecting! I bought this book a while ago, and started reading it immediately! There were so many twists and turns, and I practically devoured the book whenever I could. It was really good! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 5 Stars for a reason! As I've said before I have a love hate relationship with Ruth Ware. She is fantastic at setting a scene, making you create elaborate productions through out her books and this book was everything it needed to be to keep me interested and so so much more. She hit this one on the head! Great book that everyone who loves mystery or thriller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very, very good suspens! This was everything I was wishing for when a bought this book!
Date published: 2017-09-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Doesn't offer much on a re-read I bought this book to read on a long plane trip and it was good enough for that. Very suspenseful, good at hinting to things early on to get you intrigued but once you know 'who dun it' it's all basically over. Maybe in a few years when I forget everything about this book will it have something else to offer, but as it is it didn't leave me with anything. I've read The Women in Cabin 10 and have the same opinion about it. I don't think I'll be reading The Lying Game, unless I can pick up a cheap Mass Market edition. I will watch the movie though.
Date published: 2017-08-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book, cannot wait for the movie! I read this book in a day, it is a great who done it. I kept changing my mind about who I thought was guilty. I was very surprised at the end.

Date published: 2017-08-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really, really liked this book After I read it, borrowed by two others who also enjoyed. It's proof you can still write a good book without having a ton of "not safe for work" bits in there! I can't decide which book I liked more, this or The Woman in Cabin 10.
Date published: 2017-08-16
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Read! I love this novel by Ruth Ware. As a lover of thrillers, this novel was an excellent read. I found the twists within the novel very unpredictable. Ruth Ware is an excellent writer with her use of dialogue and descriptive language. She also does an excellent job at developing the characters. You never know which characters to trust and which not to. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading thrillers!

Date published: 2017-08-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! I am absolutely loving this (trend? Subgenre?) of women-led thrillers with unreliable narrators. Gone Girl, The Widow, Girl on the Train - when I saw this was compared to those I had to pick it up and I have no regrets. I didn't have time to finish the last 40 pages last night and spent all night obsessing over finding out what happened.
Date published: 2017-07-31
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay It was an okay read. I didn't find it scary and it took awhile for the tension to build up. I also found it was a bit predictable but still a good read.
Date published: 2017-07-31
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not scary I found I wanted to keep reading this book but was let down by it. I picked it up because I wanted to read a scary book but I found it a bit too soft and predictable.
Date published: 2017-07-26
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was okay This was my first experience with Ruth Ware's writing, and I liked it. I liked how the tension slowly built, but about halfway through I had already guessed the ending, so I was just waiting for the events to happen. Overall, still a really good read, but I wish it hadn't been so predictable.
Date published: 2017-07-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book! I just loved this book. It kept me wanting more and i loved the characters. I can't wait to read her next book...if its anything like this! #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sometimes you just gotta let people from the past go! Or some messed up stuff might go down... This book is a prime example for happy endings without the happy! (who else felt so broken at the end of this story?) I love a good thriller and this one had me asking so many questions and still has me spinning. If ever wondered what it would be like to know a complete psycho - this book is for you! So good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a fantastic book! I bought it a couple of months ago but got no time to read it until this a few days before. There are so less books that interests me but I absolutely loved reading this book! The twists are right on point and the plot was very nicely done!
Date published: 2017-07-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it! This one had me guessing the whole time. I was really captivated by the characters and could hardly wait to see how everything would unfold. Quite the ride of a story! Would definitely recommend reading it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What a good book! Bachelorette party gone off the tracks! WOW, I was totally enthralled with this story. Both loved and hated the characters, in a good way. It had all the cattiness of high school in a grown up world. This story will be vividly embossed into my mind for years to come.
Date published: 2017-07-01
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this, I couldn't put this book down. It was well written and kept me in suspense. What could possibly go wrong at a weekend bachorlette party? You must read it to find out!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very readable and exciting I thought that this book might be creepy, but it wasn't. It was the perfect mix of predictability and unexpected turns.
Date published: 2017-06-29
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Let down I was so excited to read this book! I wanted a book that would really scare me which is why I picked this one up. It was the total opposite of scary! It kept me reading but I did not find it to be much of a thriller. It was very predictable and not very challenging. It was a big let down for me.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Loved it - Until I Guessed The End I was seriously hooked from the first page with this thriller. I honestly could not put it down. I have read both of Ruth Ware's books and I enjoy her writing style as it very much reminds me of Gillian Flynn (the Queen). However, this book was SO predictable. You have it figured it out by the middle of the book... I ended up just reading to get through it and say I finished it but it does get boring when you realize you know the ending.
Date published: 2017-06-22
Rated 2 out of 5 by from predictable storyline The narrator had me frustrated with the way she remembered things and i saw the ending coming at around the middle of the book. It's an interesting story altogether, but I did not feel Ware executed the mystery as well as she could have.
Date published: 2017-06-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Think again I really did enjoy this book. Suspenseful and on edge curiosity of what happens next.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good I read Woman in Cabin 10 prior to reading this novel and loved it so immediately after reading Woman in Cabin 10 I went out and bought this book with high expectations. I can't say I didn't like it because I did but for me it didn't keep me on edge or fill me with as much as suspense as her other book. I have and will continue to recommend this book and author to my friends/family but overall just for me wasn't as good as her other.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It was good, but not great. It was a fun read, but was definitely not a terrifying book at all. It was slightly suspenseful, but that was it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So disappointed I was so disappointed throughout the entire book. After reading a number of reviews I decided to pick it up, all I wanted was an easy read that kept my attention long enough so I could binge read in a few days. The story didn't start to get remotely interesting until after 200 pages, and was downright horrible. I'm sorry, I won't be recommending this to anyone.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Predictable I read this book with little expectations so when I found it a bit anti-climatic (until the last few chapters) and predictable, I wasn't surprised nor disappointed. The writing was very fluid and flowed well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read! This book is so easy to binge read! It kept me captivated and guessing from the very beginning to the very end!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just OK for me Although the writing was really fluid and the story was at first compelling, I found that the story plot was a bit juvenile. It's an easy read if that's what you are looking for but it lacks substance for my taste.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but lacked something... Pretty suspenseful at times but never scary. Hoping the woman in cabin 10 is better! #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Much enjoyed! I purchased this book on a whim, the genre is getting pretty large pretty fast and I find I can predict how the end is going to be twisted around. If you haven't read many like this it's a great read, where I have read a few too many I find them a bit predictable. All together a great writer, good story and the well expected twist at the end was solid.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good book Not the best book, but it was ok. It was a quick and easy read.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing This book came highly recommended and the synopsis made it sound like something I would typically enjoy. Unfortunately this novel fell flat. The story was predictable and characters shallow and unlikeable. Is was, thankfully, a quick and easy read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Intense and Suspenseful! I really enjoyed this book! I had also read The Woman in Cabin 10, and I personally liked this one more. The protagonist was flawed, introverted, and relatable in many ways. I found myself questioning every single person at the bachelorette party, and I couldn't put the book down until I knew what happened that night. It's the perfect book if you're looking for something mysterious, suspenseful, and dark!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somwhat Predictable I enjoyed this read despite it becoming somewhat predictable at times. It was still suspenseful for the most part. A decent book to cuddle up to on a cold night. #plumreviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointment! This book had such a great views, so I thought this is going to be good. I finished this book very quick it was definitely a page turner, because the author writing style was very comfortable. The cover suggested that this book is very scary and unpredictable, keeps you on the edge of the seat. I don't know what kind of drug these people were on when they read this book, but it wasn't scary at all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Predictable I found this to be a big disappointment. It was drawn out, predictable and lacked excitement. Big difference from the authors other book "The Woman in Cabin 10" which i couldn't put down. This one i could put down easily. If you can borrow it or get it a the library then read it.....don't waste your money to purchase it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great read! If you have a whole weekend to yourself, this is the book for you. It keeps you on the edge of your seat and you won't want to put it down! however i do recommend reading the authors second book Woman in Cabin 10 before this one, only because i find this one has more of an eerie mystery.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! I bought this after I had bought The Woman in Cabin 10, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Ruth Ware did not disappoint! There was just enough suspense to keep you guessing and the entire sinisterness (lol not a word, but works) and secrets of each other characters was intense. I liked that the clues were small and it was difficult to guess what happened until the very end. I was a bit unsure of the ending and how the Matt character was supposed to fit in - or not I guess. Overall, great read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suspenseful While this book wasn't quite the page turner others in this genre are (The Girl on the Train, etc.) I still found myself quite hooked by this book. There were twists that kept me guessing and the ending was quite unexpected.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Suspenseful, not scary as advertised Great plot, fantastic characters. I really enjoyed this novel overall. Not scary as reviews suggest, but suspenseful and keeps your interest from start to finish. I'll be interested to see what they do with the movie.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read I stumbled across this book while browsing in the store. I was immediately intrigued by its claims of being so scary. I was a little disappointed because I found myself reading chapter after chapter waiting for something incredibly scary to happen. In the end it turned out to be scary in the sense of not being able to remember what happened leading up to some horrible events. Good twist at the end but I felt like the book's description was a little misleading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a page-turner! * I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. * I REALLY enjoyed this book! Ruth Ware is so gifted at developing strong characters with a well-paced story, I was quickly drawn into this book & didn't want to stop reading once I started! And despite the story carrying multiple characters nearly right from the beginning, each is so well-developed, I did not have a problem mixing them up or getting confused (which so often happens with weak writers). Rather, each is so real & unique, it's almost like you actually know them. Overall, I loved the main character a lot and I felt her emotional development along with the story (yay!). The pace was perfect (page-turner! Yes, it IS 2am and I just finished! Lol). I like to think myself rather clever but I was just as perplexed about the ultimate resolution as the MC was -- though this was not done in a cheap, info dump (which I hate, that is lazy writing) -- no, Ruth Ware does it beautifully by snaking it into the story in a way that makes sense & is realistic & satisfying. I loved it. SO looking forward to her next book!!!

Read from the Book

In a Dark, Dark Wood chapter 1 It hurts. Everything hurts. The light in my eyes, the pain in my head. There’s a stench of blood in my nostrils, and my hands are sticky with it. “Leonora?” The voice comes dim through a fog of pain. I try to shake my head; my lips won’t form the word. “Leonora, you’re safe—you’re at the hospital. We’re taking you to have a scan.” It’s a woman, speaking clearly and loudly. Her voice hurts. “Is there anyone we should be calling?” I try again to shake my head. “Don’t move your head,” she says. “You’ve had a head injury.” “Nora,” I whisper. “You want us to call Nora? Who’s Nora?” “Me . . . my name.” “All right, Nora. Just try to relax. This won’t hurt.” But it does. Everything hurts. What has happened? What have I done?

Editorial Reviews

“The best thing about In A Dark, Dark Wood is the eerie atmosphere it creates for this ill-fated weekend, never overwrought, just ominous enough, the glass house where the guests are trapped ‘dark and silent, blending into the trees, almost invisible.’”
