Enter the world of Crescent City, an alternate history 1930s "Chinese Los Angeles" and home turf of private investigator, Lola Starke...

A double murder. A tangle of lies. A woman committed to the truth.

A chance reunion with her schoolgirl crush, Stuey Lim, has Lola Starke dreaming of new possibilities, but her nascent hopes are brutally crushed as she witnesses Stuey and his best friend, Tommy, a world-famous comedian, gunned down in front of Crescent City's most exclusive club. Shocked and grieving, Lola is nonetheless duty-bound to investigate the deaths at the request of her mentor, Nicky Lo.

Puzzling out the intricate history of Tommy's tight-knit show business family, intent on guarding their status as closely as their secrets, is dangerous enough. But Lola must also protect Stuey's parents from a gangster with suspect claims to Stuey's cherished missing pocket watch—all while navigating a new phase in her contentious relationship with her ghost, Aubrey.

This is the '30s and this is Crescent City, where hauntings are a normal part of life and magic-fuelled funeral rites determine the dead's journey in the sacred cycle of reincarnation. Where traditions and family can nurture a comedic genius—or destroy him. And where, no matter how old the secret, blood will out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Read Full of Surprises If you like smart female characters who don't rely on a man for their strength or intelligence, you'll love Lola Starke, SG Wong's captivating protagonist. Lola isn't perfect (fortunately), but she's clever and gutsy. Add a cast of interesting people and you've got the start of a really enjoyable book. But Wong doesn't stop at the cast of characters. Crescent City has been so vividly described that I can picture parts of it as I read. I think I could happily live in this beach city. The story is set in the 30s, but Wong's research allows her to seamlessly bring in just enough cant to be believable, but not so much that it's irritating to read. But the biggest player in this book after Lola is the traditional Chinese lore that Wong weaves into the story, which is integral to the plot. Speaking of plot, this one moves deliciously from one point to the next - you'll have a hard time putting the book down until you know how it works out. However, to get the most out of In For a Pound, I highly recommend that you read SG Wong's previous novel, Die on Your Feet. I hadn't read it and felt like I was struggling to stay afloat at first. It took until about 80 pages in for me to really begin to understand the relationships between the characters. But it was worth the struggle. Disclosure: SG Wong is a friend, but didn't ask me to write a review.
