about

An action-packed, on-the-ground memoir of the Fort McMurray wildfire and the courage, resilience, and sacrifice of the firefighters who saved the city.

In May 2016, what began as a remote forest fire quickly became a nightmare for the ninety thousand residents of Fort McMurray. A perfect combination of weather, geography and circumstance created a raging wildfire that devoured everything in its path. Winds drove the flames towards the town, forcing the entire population to evacuate. As the fire swept through neighbourhoods, it fell to the men and women of the fire department to protect the city.

Born and raised in Fort McMurray, Damian Asher was a fifteen-year veteran and captain in the city’s fire department. Day after day, Damian and his crew remained on the front lines of the burning city. As embers rained down around them, they barely slept, pushing their minds and bodies to the brink as they struggled to contain the fire. As he led his crew through the smoke and the flames, Damian had little time to worry about whether the house he had built for his family was still standing. With media unable to get into the locked-down city, the world watched in hope and fear, wondering what was happening on the fiery streets.

Finally, after weeks of battling the wildfire, the firefighters managed to regain control. When the smoke cleared, much of the city had been destroyed. Would things ever be the same? How would the city reunite? What would it take to rebuild life in Fort McMurray?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well written This was an interesting story from someone who was in the fire fighting it from the very beginning until the end. It was a bone chilling story of what happened and the hard decisions that the fire fighters had to make and the struggle they went through to save the town and it's people the best they could while putting their health and lives on the line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gripping True Life Tale from Inside the Beast! A fascinating look inside The Beast, from someone who fled May 3rd with my 2 younger children and dog while my husband, our oldest daughter and my mother in law left together, several hours behind me. At times I had to remind myself that this was a true story, that these things actually happened. It still seems to surreal. Even watching video footage of the flames, I have a hard time believing it actually happened. This book is a great insight to what the firefighters witnessed and went through as they fought The Beast and saved 85% of our town. There were many times I was in tears reading the stories of loss and all that happened May 3rd and the days and weeks following. Thank you to Damian Asher, his crew, and all the firefighters who stayed, and came up, to fight The Beast. Your sacrifices are hard to imagine and my family are forever grateful for all you did to save our town. And to the parents, spouses, and children of the firefighters, it could not have been easy to have your loved ones up here fighting, and you sacrificed a lot so that 88,000 people would have something to come back to. Thank you.
