Shortlisted for the 2018 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the YearNamed One of Entertainment Weekly 's Best New Books Insidious Intent, the latest installment in Val McDermid's popular series featuring psychologist Tony Hill and detective Carol Jordan, reaffirms Val McDermid's place as Britan's reigning Queen of Crime. In the north of England, single women are beginning to disappear from weddings. A wedding crasher is luring the women away - only to torch the victims' bodies in their own cars in remote locations, leaving behind no personal clues or forensic traces. It is the first official case for Carol's elite Regional Major Incident Team - and maybe the toughest case she and Tony have ever had to face. It all comes together in an ending that hits like a bomb blast," The Globe and Mail raved. "Don't miss this one and save it for the day when you want to read straight through.""
Val McDermid's best-selling novels have won the Los Angeles Times Book of the Year and the CWA Gold Dagger and Cartier Diamond Dagger Awards. She is also a multiple finalist for the Edgar Award, including for Edgar Nominee for Fact Crime Forensics, which won the Anthony Award for non-fiction. She lives in Scotland.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dark, meticulous, and menacing! Insidious Intent is a riveting tale that immerses you into the evidence collection and investigation into the kidnapping and violent homicide of several lonely, vulnerable women and the hunt for a serial killer with a penchant for fire. The prose is sophisticated and crisp. The characterization is spot on with all the usual gang back including the resilient, determined Carol Jordan whose greatest struggles involve her own guilt, secrets, demons, and addictions. And the plot is a skillfully crafted mix of twists, turns, murder, police corruption, manipulation, obsession, and deception. Overall, Insidious Intent is nicely paced and has exceptional depth in both the storyline and character development. And even though this is the tenth book in the Tony Hill & Carol Jordan series, McDermid has written such an intriguing, entertaining tale that new fans will be quickly adding the previous novels in the series to their TBR and long-standing fans will be satisfied, surprised, and eager for book #11.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a very good read It seems like there are once again problems for the Major Crime Scene Incident team, but I loved catching up on what they were up to, especially since Insidious Intent starts up where the last Hill/Jordan book left off. If you haven't read Val McDermid yet, you should definitely give her a try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic author Val McDermid is simply one of the best crime writers around. I have loved every book she's written. She has a number of series. Out of Bounds is the fourth novel featuring Inspector Karen Pirie. But you could absolutely read this as a stand alone. Pirie is working cold cases. When a DNA sample from an accident victim turns up a match with a twenty two year old unsolved murder, Karen hopes for a quick solve to an old case. But it's not as straight forward as she hoped. And being Karen, she can't help but follow a case that interests her. Even when it's not hers. A terrorist bombing, also from twenty plus years ago is one she can't let go. Karen is a wonderfully flawed character, struggling to overcome her own tragedies and doubts, while still maintaining a professional demeanor. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But you can't help but be in her corner. She's fierce and driven to find answers. The mental and verbal sparring between her and her superior is such fun to read. Her partner Jason is not as quick, but they make a good team. And it's impossible not to like him. Where McDermid's books shine are in the plotting. Complex and not easily sussed out. I enjoy following the police work needed to unravel the answers, discovering the connections along with the characters. McDermid adds a nice (and timely) piece of social commentary with Karen befriending some Syrian refugees. Absolutely recommended. (As are the previous twenty nine books she's written!)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Accessible Overview of Modern Forensics This excellent book contains a compelling overview of the field of forensic science. The subcategories discussed include: fire investigations, entomology, pathology, toxicology, fingerprinting, anthropology, etc. – even courtroom strategies; a chapter is devoted to each one. The author not only describes some of the history and early developments but also current state-of-the-art capabilities of each discipline. In my opinion, a book on forensics would not be complete without the recounting of various specific criminal cases – and this the author has done very well. I found this book to be very well written in a prose that is clear, friendly, lively, accessible and quite engaging. I believe that anyone can enjoy this fascinating book – especially true crime buffs. As an avid forensic science enthusiast, I particularly enjoyed the discussions on recent developments in each subcategory; this is an area where I learned quite a bit. Consequently, I suspect others like me may appreciate this information as well.
