Excerpt from Interpretation of Art: Essays on the Art Criticism of John Ruskin, Walter Pater, Clive Bell, Roger Fry and Herbert Read

Insofar as criticism is applied aesthetics, I feel justified in devoting the major part of this study to the examination of aesthetic theory. My task might have been easier had any of the writers with whom I am concerned been creators Of systems, but there is nothing in English writing on art com parable to German scholarship in the nineteenth and twen tieth centuries, with its thorough investigation of art history, the psychology of perception, and the aesthetics of expression and pure visibility. My own approach is not postulated on any fixed set of aesthetic assumptions. Criticism is a complex activity, involving the subtle interaction of practice and theory. I have attempted to extract from the work of each of these writers those theoretical assumptions which form the basis of his critical practice and to trace the development of aesthetic doctrine as it was modified by the critic's experi ence of actual works of art.
