about

Before I Go to Sleep meets Sleeping with the Enemy in this sexy and suspenseful psychological debut thriller that is absolutely unputdownable--exploring romantic obsession, the darker side of female friendships, and the line between love and violence--named Amazon UK’s Best Book of the Year, and already praised by Karin Slaughter, S.J. Watson, Rosamund Lupton, and Chevy Stevens.

Catherine Bailey has been enjoying the single life long enough to know a catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic and spontaneous, Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell.

But what begins as flattering attentiveness and passionate sex turns into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon learns there is a darker side to Lee. His increasingly erratic, controlling behaviour becomes frightening, but no one believes her when she shares her fears. Increasingly isolated and driven into the darkest corner of her world, a desperate Catherine plans a meticulous escape.

Four years later, Lee is behind bars and Catherine—now Cathy—compulsively checks the locks and doors in her apartment, trusting no one. But when an attractive upstairs neighbour, Stuart, comes into her life, Cathy dares to hope that happiness and love may still be possible . . . until she receives a phone call informing her of Lee’s impending release. Soon after, Cathy thinks she catches a glimpse of the former best friend who testified against her in the trial; she begins to return home to find objects subtly rearranged in her apartment, one of Lee’s old tricks. Convinced she is back in her former lover’s sights, Cathy prepares to wrestle with the demons of her past for the last time.

Utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, Into the Darkestcorner is an ingeniously structured and plotted tour de force of suspense that marks the arrival of a major new talent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read I found this book to be incredibly intense to the point of being difficult to put down. Very well-written characters and excellent story-telling. It was difficult to read at times because of the content. Worth a read all the same.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from couldn't find a place to stop reading! It is strange to say you love a book that is full of abuse and psychological manipulation, but I must have because I could barely put it down. I was stuck in the bathtub for 3 hours because I couldn't find a place to stop reading. It took me that long to realize that there were no chapters to remind you to take a break! I am usually not very fond of books that take you back and forth from the present to the past but the author did it so cleverly that it was almost seamless. The only sentence that took me completely out of the story was at the beginning, on page 14, where she wrote "...the party they'd had had lasted all night". I had to read it over at least 5 times and still can't get it out of my head because I don't think I've ever read a sentence with 3 'had's in a row!! Crazy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from one of my favourite book of all time brought this 3 years ago. the plot was catchy and new. it was confusing at first because it was written in a dairy form where one chapter would be her life now, the next would be her life another time, it refers back and forth. i love how the author incorporated so much OCD info in the book, i learnt a lot of things about OCD while i read the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very dark, very violent, very REAL! I usually like books with a darker tone, but man, I literally lost sleep thinking about this book after putting it down each night (which was extremely hard to do). I woke up at 3 in the morning with my brain just going a mile a minute about this story. Extremely well written. Riveting. Scary. Violent. I have had a previous experience with dealing with a stalker, but nothing to the extent of this book. It was hard for me to read what Cathy was going through because I was feeling it right there along with her. I picked this book on a whim, not knowing what to expect, and I was not disappointed. An excellent read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Kept me up at night Elizabeth Haynes writes a great first book with Into the Darkest Corner. This is the guy you wish, pray and hope your daughters, your sisters, your friends, never meet, never fall in love with. So perfect in so many ways, he knows how to make you brush off the evil. Perfect book for a evening with a glass of wine and a warm blanket to ward off the dredges of his perfect evilness. Looking forward to her next book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Run to the bookstore! This book was recommended to me by another wonderful author, Chevy Stevens. I stayed away from the tv for 3 nights because I couldn't get my nose out of this book! It's the story of an abused woman, but the way it's written, the tension builds with every chapter. It goes from the past to the present, so we dont know what really happened to her until late in the book. If you want a suspense full book, this is it. Amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Into the Darkest Corner Sure is Dark This was a very intense book and, at times, almost hard to read. However, do not get me wrong, this book was excellent. It was so well done and well written, but the subject matter is dark and there is no way around that. Domestic violence is never an easy subject to tackle. Darkest Corner jumps back and forth between Cathy's past in 2003 and her present in 2007, so we slowly get to see what happened to her to make her so obsessive compulsive. I could barely put this book down and just throoughly enjoyed it, even though it was, at points, disturbing and terrifying.
