The second largest in the world by area, Canada is a multiracial, multicultural, multi-ethnic place with strong trading tie to both the United States and Asia. With the explosive growth of Canadian universities since 1970, the concomitant increase in scholarly writing, and the multiplication of theoretical positions on Canadian history, an annotated bibliography of Canadian history providing a useable reference source for the specialist and non-specialist alike is long overdue. Introducing Canada provides this needed introduction to works on Canadian history written since 1970, while exploring current themes in politics, economics, external affairs, ethnicity, gender, regional issues, and the working class. It is organized alphabetically by author and focuses on academic works, though some important popular studies are also included. In addition to presenting brief descriptions of more than 1,000 historical monographs dealing with Canada, the bibliography introduces the reader to several historiographic debates and places key works within that context. Annotations are provided for major journals of Canadian history, and several collections of reprinted articles are cited due to their importance. Author and subject indexes.
Brian Gobbett is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of Alberta. Robert Irwin has a Ph.D. in history from the University of Alberta.

Editorial Reviews

more than just a well-organized, annotated bibliography of recent publications on numerous aspects Canadian history published in English, this volume also contains brief attributes of research trends, both past and present. The pragmatic annotations provide the reader with information about the work discussed, a brief glimpse of the background of the event or issue being discussed, and both the strengths and weaknesses of the work...the scope of the work is broad, with a few titles published in the 1970s but the majority of titles more recent.
