about

In the winter of 1951, a storyteller, the last practitioner of an honored, centuries-old tradition, arrives at the home of nine-year-old Ronan O'Mara in the Irish countryside. For three wonderful evenings, the old gentleman enthralls his assembled local audience with narratives of foolish kings, fabled saints, and Ireland's enduring accomplishments before moving on. But these nights change young Ronan forever, setting him on a years-long pursuit of the elusive, itinerant storyteller and the glorious tales that are no less than the saga of his tenacious and extraordinary isle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic quick read Ireland sat on my bookshelf longer than it ever should have--you absolutely lose yourself in this novel! It follows our storyteller and the people he meets along the road, and one boy whose life he particularly touches. This wraps you up in the boy's quest, even as a young man, to see the storyteller again while it takes you through the tales in his head he remembers from that fateful night he spent with the man and his family. There is a neat twist to the story you don't see coming because you're so distracted by the loveliness of the tale--very emotional book, actually, but very whole, very complete. Brings you full circle while giving you a taste of the gorgeous culture and country that is Ireland!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ireland: The Novel While Ronan and the search for his Storyteller move this novel from the opening page to the final paragraph, the main character in this tale is Ireland... Ireland the entity that encompasses both land and people. What wonderful way of making history and a country truly live on the page. Well done!
