Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and Other Concerns)

Crown/Archetype | September 18, 2012 | Trade Paperback

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and Other Concerns) is rated 4.26666666666667 out of 5 by 45.

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved it! She's so funny!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light and funny I'm on the last chapter of this book and I really have enjoyed it! Personally I think her second book, "Why Not Me?" is better, but I still enjoyed this one too and would recommend it to anyone that is a fan of Mindy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very fun read A very funny and enjoyable read. I found it to be a great change to my typical dramatic, story-line based novels. And Mindy's lists are not only hilarious but bluntly insightful!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this! Wow. A racialized not skinny female comedian. Never thought I'd see the day. Although these are reasons I respect Mindy Kaling, it's not why I love her. That comes from who she is. Read this to see why

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Getting to Know Mindy I didn't know who Mindy was before watching her recent show The Mindy Project (amazing). This book is before I knew who she was. It's great to have a closer look to really grasp her career and how she developed. It's a very quick read, I enjoyed the style the book was put together as quick entries. Her voice and personality really came through as I read. Why Not Me is currently on route to my home can't wait to see what has happened next!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Indigo Staff Pick Mindy Kaling’s debut is one of those books that you pick up and can’t put down! I read this book when it first came out, and it has still been one of those books I pick up when I’m in the mood for a laugh. Kaling’s writing style is so true to how she is you can basically hear her voice coming from the pages. Mindy is like that best friend you’ve always wanted who just gets it, and says it like it is. “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)” is a compilation of Mindy Kaling’s musings, and it gives you a bit of insight into how Mindy has worked her way up to get where she is. Such a great and funny read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A sneak peak into the mind of a comedy writer I did not expect any less or any more from Mindy. In fact, when I was reading this book, her voice was reading it en lieu of mine - it was so spot on of what I've seen of Mindy through her show writing and acting. Talk about being consistent. It was a light read but she definitely brings up some good points. I'm reassured that I'm not the only one who thinks about some things she discussed in her book!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Expected more from a comedy writer I like Mindy's personality and chuckled a few times, but encountered no deep belly laughs. I found the repetitive "or whatever"s became quickly irritating. Perhaps the reader is expected to hear the words in Mindy's voice, and maybe then it would be funnier. The words alone just didn't do it for me, for the most part. If you're looking for a well-edited, grammar-respecting novel to pass enthusiastically to your friends which doesn't seem like a choppy brain dump of blog posts or journal entries, I personally don't think this is it. PS - I picked this up after reading Chelsea Handler's "Uganda Be Kidding Me" that left me in stitches (sorry Mindy); that may have been my first mistake.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for me I was looking for a light read but this was just so far out of my interests that I was very bored. I respect Mindy but I found the book shallow and uninteresting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love love love I love Mindy, I find her hilarious and if you have seen and enjoyed anything with her in it (especially the Mindy Project) I highly suggest you read this. The book had me laughing out loud through pretty much the entire thing. I'm not one to reread books but I will for sure read this one over and over--it's a great pick-me-up!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Is everyone hanging... I feel like my sister from another mother nailed it. Cindy is awesome, no, Mindy, my bad. So glad she embraces and owns her body-you know why they call clothes a size 0? because that is how much personality you need to fit in them. What self-respecting woman says no to chocolate? Love you Mindy, call me and we will do lunch-later!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read Irreverent and funny, it's easy to see what has made Mindy Kaling a successful tv comedy writer. If you enjoy any of her television work you will obviously enjoy this read, but I think it is valuable beyond that as well. In particular I think this is a book that young women would benefit from reading. Not just those interested in a similar career, but those who are learning about who they are and what they love, and how to shape that into a genuine and fulfilling adulthood.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect beach read...or couch read....or anywhere really Her humour just kills me, she's so self-deprecating and unapologetic I love it. I found this book well written and quite funny, even my husband read it after! Love her, love her show - if you liked the Office and/or Mindy Project you need to read this ASAP.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little confused I have to admit that the only way i knew about Mindy Kaling when i was buying the book was The Office. Moreover, i didnt even know she was one of the writers. So basically i was buying the book "written by the girl who played Kelly". Even though it got a disclaimer of "you read it like a magazine" - it doesnt feel this way at all times. My main trouble with the book is that it is very irregular in its style. Some parts you read through in a blink of an eye, others you dont even understand why you are supposed to be reading it, because it is either irrelevant or is out of your age range. However i definitely had an easy relaxing experience. P.S. I started watching Mindy Project right after that and some of the jokes are in both book and series (not the case with The Office). This threw me off a bit, but luckily they stopped it fast enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More Mindy! I couldn't get enough of this book. Talking in her blunt fashion that never gets old, Mindy captures what it's like to be in a forever gabbing, gossiping, thinking, creating mind. It can get you into trouble but who cares, because you're just doing you. Mindy reminds you of this in her easy-to-read, funny manner.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A light flirty read. If you like Mindy's sense of humour you will enjoy this book. It reads like she explains in the beginning, like a great magazine but with a lot of humour in her life stories. I think she is so hilarious and I love how straight forward she is about her perspective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Mindy - so funny! This was a great book to read, as mentioned by previous reviews it is a great way to get insight on how Mindy started her career. If you have watched her show her humor is exactly the same in this book, so funny! Loved this book

Rated 5 out of 5 by from You will be laughing out load with every page you read! This book is just hilarious! If you’ve seen Mindy as Kelly Kapoor in The Office or as Mindy Lahiri in her new show The Mindy Project then you know what a comical character she plays in these roles and seeing as Mindy Kaling is just such an absolutely talented human being you would know that she was a writer for both shows, so this books will not disappoint. Not that Mindy is like the characters she plays on TV, but she will definitely makes you laugh just as hard.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Easy, funny read! A must-read for Mindy fans! A sweet and honest account of her childhood and early career. You probably won't be asked to write a book report on this, but you will be entertained.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Mindy's humor so much! I love Mindy Kaling from The Mindy Project. I must admit I've only got to know her (through tv) from The Mindy Project and not The Office. I loved her role on The Mindy Project and only later found out she actually writes for the show and is also a producer (triple threat is right! < something Mindy mentioned in this book). When I knew she wrote an autobiographical/humor book, I HAD to get my hands on it. Now that I've read it, I am so so happy that I tracked it down and requested it from Random House Canada. I loved it so much and laughed.. out loud? in public? SEVERAL times.. I am not lying when I say my sister and my friend were embarrassed because I would spontaneously (in their eyes) burst out laughing in the middle of a cafe. This book is all kinds of awesome. Mindy's humor is definitely not lost through her writing.. it might even be more prominent. I would reread so many paragraphs and get anyone beside me to listen to me. At one point I tried telling my sister about a chapter titled "Chubby Life" and I honestly had to take a break every word to laugh, to the point that I just passed her the book and pointed vaguely at the paragraph and continued laughing and wiping my tears. The way Mindy wove in her humor and still managed to pretty much tell us her life story is such a skill. I loved reading up more about her and learning about her rise from a babysitter with no health insurance to a permanent writer on The Office. Of course this book was published pre-The Mindy Project, so I was a little disappointed in that (my problem, not the book's) but she DOES have a new book coming out and I'm super excited for that. I pretty much never read non-fiction, but I think I'm going to make an except for humor non-fiction.. at least if they are anywhere near as good as Mindy's book. Still, I feel like Mindy's humor is very unique and that's why I love her so much on her show. I can't recommend this book enough and I already have two people who are waiting in line to borrow this book from me. It is only 222 pages and they're all amazing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Is everyone hanging out without me? It was very well written compared to most bio's but I did find it a tad dull. Also though it was different because here was a woman writing her bio and it wasn't infiltrated about boys or men and the heartache that she went through. This book, through and through is warmly written and not over the top. Kinda like the way a bio should be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mindy's the best! Easy, bright, honest and all those other cliche things real book reviewers write. Read it! Had much fun making others wonder, "What is that guy reading?" Or, "Do you think he has a neurological disorder?" - cuz I don't remember how to spell Tourettes - is that it?!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mindy Kaling is the funniest Such a hilarious book. Mindy Kaling writes stories in such a way that they can be sad but she still makes you laugh. I guess thats what happens when you're a comedy writer. A very insightful book for any young girl struggling in her path to success, reassuring her that there will be bad times that you will eventually look back on and laugh.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mindy's the best! If you love Mindy's dry sense of humour and want a glimpse into the life of a Hollywood writer (or Hollywood writer wannabe), this is your book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mindy's the best! I loves this book. It was hilarious. I kept laughing out loud the hole way through. If you are a fan of the office or The Mindy project, please read this book. It's an easy read. I read it all within a few hours. I just couldn't put the book down. Her personality and comedy are priceless.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Relateable I found the first 3/4 of this book hilarious and down to earth. You almost forget that Mindy is a successful TV writer and actress. The last 1/4 of the book was kind of drawn out and wasn't holding my attention. Still glad I bought it though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Can we be BFF's, Mindy?? Dear Mindy, Can we be BFF's? We can have sleepovers and watch television reruns all night. We can not go for runs together. We'll gossip about boys all night. It will be glorious. Love, Brie Ok, but seriously, Mindy is one of those famous people I would actually want to be best friends with in real life. I watched Mindy as Kelly Kapoor on the office for years, looking forward to every time she appeared in an episode (damn you Mindy, for being such a great writer for the show that you eventually had to stop acting in it altogether). Then I found out she was writing a book and I was pretty excited for it's release. AND THEN, I found out she had her very own show coming out. Needless to say, I've watched every episode of The Mindy Project since it began airing last fall and I love it. I am a HUGE Mindy fan. Obviously. Having listened to Mindy's book shortly before her new TV show began has made me appreciate her show so much more. I feel like it's so "Mindy". So many of her personality quirks and tendencies that ooze out of her book seem to be portrayed in her character on the The Mindy Project. She may be acting to film the show, but her character on The Mindy Project is relatable, honest, sarcastically hilarious and just trying to find love when it seems like the search is hopeless. Which, really, isn't too far off from the Mindy in her book. Plus, her name in the show is also Mindy, so there's that. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely hilarious! Great read! Mindy delivers the same wit and humour she did for the Office in this collection of essays written about her life. It's such an easy read-- I finished it in no time, the humour made me laugh out loud. She brings a quirky, fun, yet professional feel to her writings, which is relatable and fun to laugh at. Even if you haven't seen her show, definitely check out this book. You'll fall in love with Mindy.

Read from the Book

Chubby for LifeI don’t remember a time when I wasn’t chubby. Like being Indian, being chubby feels like it is just part of my permanent deal. I remember being in first grade, in Mrs. Gilmore’s class at Fiske Elementary School, and seeing that Ashley Kemp, the most popular girl in our class, weighed only thirty-seven pounds. We knew this because we weighed her on the industrial postal scale they kept in the teacher’s supply closet. I was so envious. I snuck into the supply closet later that same day to weigh myself. I was a whopping sixty-eight pounds. Some of the first math I understood was that I was closer to twice Ashley’s weight than to her weight.“Don’t be closer to twice a friend’s weight than to her actual weight,” I told myself. This little mantra has helped me stave off obesity for more than two decades. My mom’s a doctor, but because she came from India and then Africa, where childhood obesity was not a problem, she put no premium on having skinny kids. In fact, she and my dad didn’t mind having a chubby daughter. Part of me wonders if it even made them feel a little prosperous, like Have you seen our overweight Indian child? Do you know how statistically rare this is? It will then not come as a surprise to you that I’ve never been thin in my life—except the day I was born, when I was six pounds. It’s a small point of pride that I was a six-pound baby, because from my limited understanding of baby weights, that’s on the skinnier side. I flaunt my low baby weight the wa
