Health science expert Timothy Caulfield is on a mission to debunk the bad science and false happiness that flows from celebrity culture
Over the past few decades, celebrity culture's grip on our society has tightened. For Timothy Caulfield, a health science expert, this culture has a measurable influence on individual life choices and health care decisions.
In typical Caulfield manner, it isn't enough to just interview experts and read all of the current studies (which he does). He tries celebrity-recommended beauty routines and diets. After attending a modeling competition, he enrolls in an assessment/audition for a modelling agency in Hollywood. He follows celebrity Twitter feeds, reads gossip blogs and forces himself to read every issue--cover to cover--of People magazine, for an entire year, in his quest to understand the relationship between celebrity culture and our individual health choices. In this fun, factual book, Caulfield separates sense from nonsense and provides usable and evidence-informed advice about what actually works and what is a waste of money and time.
TIMOTHY CAULFIELD is a professor in the Faculty of Law and the School of Public Health as well as research director of the Health Law and Science Policy Group at the University of Alberta. Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Important Read (for the future!) This book's easy to read premise focuses on how celebrity culture, and our desire to be apart of it, influences so much of our behaviour with little regard for scientific evidence. The author is fun and the book causes self-reflection. I did however think there would be a larger focus on debunking celebrity health claims (hence the Gwyneth title). It is also comically outdated in parts- talking about celebrities that are no longer A-list, or around in a totally different context (the White House). However that just adds to the charm and highlights how fast celebrity culture changes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Book Everyone Must Read A lot of things we do are influenced by celebrities, such as diet and lifestyle. However, many of us don't realize that these little things have little or no scientific evidence to back them up. In his book, Dr. Timothy Caulfield experiences the ways in which celebrity culture influences us and give his own advice as well as any knowledge science has to offer. This book was recommended to me by one of my professors. It was funny and educational. I would definitely recommend to everyone.
