The acclaimed author of Miss Rumphius recounts the lives of four generations living on a New England coastal island and the importance of family ties.

The youngest and quietest of 12 children, Matthias grew closest to Tibbets Island, learning its secrets through the years. And though in later years he sailed to faraway places, he always returned to the island he loved.

"Island Boy is certain to be a favorite for family sharing, as well as a must for school and public libraries. Teachers will love it; buy extra copies."—School Library Journal

"As encompassing as the portrait of a life depicted in the award-winning Miss Rumphius , Cooney's latest work is an ode to simple acts of daily living."—Publishers Weekly

Customer Reviews of Island Boy

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfectly Delightful This book is well written and beautifully illustrated. It reminded me of my grandfather in a very positive way. I used this book when I taught as it's a good way to study not just the past but the way characters develop. The illustrations are an important part of the story. Very detailed. I used the book to introduce the concept of learning from the pictures because as children move away from "picture books" they often shun use of pictures as immature. Many of my students feel, after reading this story, that their artistic talent is important and deserving of care, attention and development. I missed the book since I retired as I left my copies behind so I am happy to have Island Boy back.
