Calixa Lavallée and Marc Lescarbot were composers. Catherine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie were writers. Emily Carr and Frances Anne Hopkins were artists. Anne Leonowens and Frances Hawkins were teachers. Étienne Verrier and James Dickson were mapmakers. George Storm was a murderer. These people all had one thing in common. They were extra-ordinary people with extra-ordinary talents. These people were a vital part of this fascinating mosaic known as Canada. Little known people or little known deeds make for an interesting read through Canada’s history. It Happened in Canada is a collection of short stories about extra-ordinary people with extra-ordinary stories. The author comes from a long line of storytellers. Each one of these people she brings to life with a unique story that needs to be told. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extra-ordinary “Untold stories about great and small deeds”. These stories are written to remind us about the people and their deeds that built the foundation of Canada. The main characters and their contributions are real but the other characters are fictional. Learn the reality of the composer’s life, who created the music to our Canadian national anthem. Take an inside look at the life of Ètienne Verrier who was assigned the mission to oversee the construction of a strong defense fort in New France. We can take pride too in our musical heritage as the first known musical was created and performed in Nova Scotia, on boats no less! Although there are many more, the author has chosen ten important Canadians that we should not forget. They were musicians, writers, voyageurs, teachers and more. Emily-Jane Hills Orford has accomplished the goal of reaffirming Canada’s rich history. She passes on vital knowledge to the next generation, who after all, are our future. With her mother’s creative expertise, the author has produced a unique history book, which is easy to read and learn from. Each story is followed up with a postscript with precise details about the character and contributions. Emily has completed her book with a Bibliography and Teacher Resources for interactive learning. Emily-Jane Hills Orford was born in Toronto, Ontario and with a strong national pride she researches our heritage and gladly passes it along. She is an accomplished author and music teacher with strong family values. I would not hesitate to highly recommend her book.
