It Starts With Food outlines a clear, balanced, sustainable plan to change the way you eat forever—and transform your life in profound and unexpected ways. Your success story begins with the Whole30®, Dallas and Melissa Hartwig’s powerful 30-day nutritional reset.
Since 2009, their underground Whole30 program has quietly led tens of thousands of people to weight loss, enhanced quality of life, and a healthier relationship with food—accompanied by stunning improvements in sleep, energy levels, mood, and self-esteem. More significant, many people have reported the “magical” elimination of a variety of symptoms, diseases, and conditions in just 30 days.

More important, they outline their lifelong strategy for eating Good Food in one clear and detailed action plan designed to help you create a healthy metabolism, heal your digestive tract, calm systemic inflammation, and put an end to unhealthy cravings, habits, and relationships with food.
Infused with the Hartwigs’ signature wit, tough love, and common sense, It Starts With Food is based on the latest scientific research and real-life experience, and includes testimonials, a detailed shopping guide, a meal-planning template, a Meal Map with creative, delicious recipes, and much more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great program to help you reset your thoughts and habits around food! If you want to 'reset' your eating habits and eat more wholesome and clean foods - but need a plan to do so - this is a must read (+ you obviously have to do as the book describes) for you. I've done the W30 multiple times and it's the best experience every time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 30 Days to find out what ails me! Right now I'd give it a 4.5. (Ask me in 30 days how I feel!!) The writing is clear, and the science is helpful with the convincing. Sometimes I felt like the Hartwigs are a bit naive as to how hard it is to change your diet around the "reg's" of the world. At one point they talk about people gathering around food for socializing and celebrations/ traditions, and it's hard to be the odd man out (I've been gluten-free for 5 years now. It sucks.). They say something like, "we assume you stopped giving in to peer pressure in grade 7, but nice try!! People don't like to feel guilty about the crap they eat and feel better when everyone else eats it too. I am a [crochet] ninja warrior and am waging a war on the dominant Western culture. Dairy, sugar and grains? YOU SHALL NOT PASS [my lips for the month of June].

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerful A great read if you are interested in why and how certain foods affect you a certain way. If you are not interested in the science, skip to the Whole 30 book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read for Anyone Interested in Feeling Good I must have found this book at the perfect point in my life because had I seen it a month earlier, I might have thought cutting all dairy, grains, soy, sugar, legumes, and alcohol from my diet - even for only 30 days - as absolutely nuts. I love food and I don't like the idea of depriving yourself so I can perfectly understand how anyone would think this would be a huge undertaking. My motivation to make change came from the daily pain I had due to an inflammatory response and my mother's recent diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease. I am happy to say I am living proof of the power of chosen foods as medicine! Gone are so many of my "complaints" I had just accepted as part of aging: achey joints, poor sleep, blurry vision, fatigue, moodiness, along with an unwanted muffin top. This book includes all the science I needed (with complete references so I could source original research myself) to justify making the effort. One question to consider: If you are willing to take medicines to control your symptoms, why not be willing to change what you put in your body every day as a way to elimate ailments and reduce the cost of medications and the many side effects that go along with taking medication. Change can be challenging, but I'm finding the positive health benefits worth the effort.
