Rated 1 out of 5 by from False Advertising My family was not impressed with Jamie Oliver’s Jamie’s Dinners: The Essential Family Cookbook. For me a “family cookbook” contains recipes that: 1. Are fast to cook. I do not have time to make a meal that takes more than 30 to 45 minutes to cook. Most of the recipes in this book have no time reference of any kind. Pumpkin Rice Laksa Soup took us over 2-and-a-half hours to make. Jamie even had the gall to suggest that we serve the soup in a (second) hollowed-out pumpkin. I serve everything out of the pot it was cooked in. This is because I loath the idea of washing even one more dish. I wash enough dishes already and it already takes too much time. I have to be honest and state that there is a chapter called “5 Minute Wonders” in which Jamie produces meals that take him approximately 5 minutes to cook. He timed himself to prove that they only take 5 minutes. But that is the thing: these recipes take Jamie Oliver, professional celebrity chef, approximately 5 minutes to cook. These recipes take me 10 minutes just to find all the ingredients. My husband thinks that it would have been more realistic if Jamie had timed a non-chef (he actually said a lawyer or a plumber, but I speak Cliff.) Moreover, I think that “takes 5 minutes to cook” means that it is 5 minutes from the moment all my ingredients are set out to the second that the finished meal hits the table. Jamie seems to have completely forgotten that I don’t have a sous-chef tucked away behind my Kitchen Aid. I have to do all my own prep and I am not a professional chef. I am not even particularly handy with a knife. Prep takes time and Jamie has completely neglected to take that time into account. 2. Are easy to follow. I don’t want to have to search through my recipe for the next step. Number them. Separate them. Make them clear. Part of this is making the measurements easy to replicate. The following “measurements” are not easy to replicate: a bunch, 2 handfuls, a knob, 2 wine glasses, etc… You have got to be kidding me! Why even have standardized measurements, Jamie? 3. Suggest easy and quick sides. Watch this: “Serve with a hearty whole-grain bread.” or “Good served on top of a bed of couscous.” See how easy it is, Jamie? You should try it sometime. 4. Contain a variety of easily found ingredients. I realize that Jamie is a chef who lives in a big city and has access to some fantastic markets. But I do not. My family lives in a very small town that contains one surprisingly well-stocked grocery store in Northern Ontario. (I know it could be worse; we could live in Northern Nunavut.) I find it difficult to get very fresh tuna steaks. Actually, tuna only comes in the can here. I got laughed at when I asked where they had the lime leaves hidden. I only know what a Jerusalem artichoke is because we bought some through our food co-op on a whim one time. But the entire book does not contain a single recipe containing either tofu or cauliflower; both of which I just happen to have in the house. And we laughed and laughed about these instructions for making tomato soup: “…go down to your local market at the end of the day you may find that they are selling off tomatoes cheap.” Our “local market” is a 45-minute drive away and is only open from on Saturday mornings mid-May to mid-October. Tomatoes do not grow particularly well here as we are in zone 3 and are; thus, available at the market for about a month each year. They sell like hot cakes. 5. Are delicious. I have to admit that Jamie got a B in this category. While nothing was amazing, everything we tried was good. Also, I do not need an entire chapter devoted to “everyone’s” favourite foods. The chapter “The Top Ten” is devoted to the top ten favourite foods of people who visited his website. I guess they were mostly Brits because I seriously do not know anyone born here whose favourite food is Bangers and Mash. Actually, most people here think Bangers and Mash is some kind of S & M practice. Anyway, why would I need Jamie Oliver to teach me how to cook my favourite foods. They are my favourites. They are what we eat all the time. That is why we have parents: to teach us ten basic recipes. that way we don’t starve when we are all grown-up and need to feed ourselves. In short, I do not recommend this cookbook because it is not a family cookbook, as it claims to be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful! I love this book because I can relate to Jamie on a certain level in the sense that I am also a young person who loves to cook. I'm 20...it is a ground-in belief that only mums and cooks are the only people in this world who have an interest in the craft. Jamie makes cooking really enjoyable by encouraging people to eat better, more natural foods - and by showing them that the effort to do so is not as bad as it has always been perceived. I absolutely love the photography in this book as well. All the food looks scrumptious, and I really like that photos of his friends and loved ones are included in the book too...it really shows that food has so much to do with not just basic feeding , but it really is a true expression of love.

English being my 2nd language, I used to turn off TV when Jamie was on not getting any of the british words + accent he had....Loving food and liking the idea to see a young and different type of Chef on TV I enjoyed very much READING Jamie's suggestions and recipes in his latest book; I appreciated as well knowing that he's all about organic and fresh products without forgetting how expensive those products can be sometimes, but pointing out that you are definitely what you eat....Easy recipes, easy hands-on, some reminded me of my grandma's and that has never been a bad thing...beautiful photos and some interesting advice on setting up your kitchen....A great present (all year-long) to yourself and/or to the one for whom food is just their second if not first religion....Bon appetit !
