Meet Jessica Jones. Once upon a time, she was a costumed super hero...but not a very good one. Her powers were unremarkable compared to the amazing abilities of the costumed icons that populate the Marvel Universe. In a city of Marvels, Jessica Jones never found her niche. Now a chain-smoking, self-destructive alcoholic with a mean inferiority complex, Jones is the owner and sole employee of Alias Investigations - a small, private-investigative firm specializing in superhuman cases. When she uncovers the potentially explosive secret of one hero's true identity, Jessica's life immediately becomes expendable. But her wit, charm and intelligence just may help her survive through another day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really freakin' good I was apprehensive about the "sex and swearing" that is invariably mentioned when this comic comes up in conversation because those kinds of things can be so off-puttingly gratuitous if not handled carefully. I was delightfully surprised to find the two es's were anything but gratuitous. They lent the book a ground-level flavour that served the story and character effectively and convincingly. This still felt like a Marvel book, but the heroics were quieter, more personal and tempered by a imperfect protagonist who nonetheless remained compellingly human, and who you could root despite her mistakes and rough-around-the-edges tendencies. This was a lot of fun to read. Alias is compelling, thrilling, tragic, and ultimately uplifting; it stands as one of the best Marvel runs I've read in a long time. Highly recommended,

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A twist on a classic character archetype We've seen the hard drinking private eye before in other stories. It's become a cliche of crime fiction stories at this point. However, Jessica Jones is different because not only is she a hard drinking private eye, she has powers and used to hang out with the Avengers. Now that's a twist that will lure you in.
