The Starker family appears to be cursed: every person of Starker blood has died from being struck by lightning. Fourteen-year-old Newton Starker is the last of his line—except for his great-grandmother, Enid, a woman as friendly as a pickled wolverine— and he’s determined to survive.
Newton has spent all of his life following a list of rules for self-preservation, guidelines passed down through generations of Starkers. But Newton wants to try something new. He has enrolled at Jerry Potts Academy of Higher Learning and Survival in Moose Jaw with the hope that he’ll be able to beat the odds. But if he wants to go beyond just getting by, Newton is going to need more than rules. He’s going to need friends.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dreaming of Books Review All his life Newton has had to be extremely careful. Constantly checking the weather forecast and keeping his famous Starker temper in check. After the death of his mother (by lightning) he enrolls at the Jerry Pots Academy of Higher Learning and Survival where he learns how to survive in any situation. He’s the second last surviving Starker in the world so Newton is trying everything he can to try to beat the odds. Newton has had a pretty isolated childhood. He wasn’t allowed outside to play with the other kids and was discouraged by his mother to make any friends. So when he’s befriended by Edward, he’s really not used to having someone like that around. He’s always looking out for himself so he has to learn that it’s not all about him and to trust others around him as well. By the end Newton really comes to terms with who he is and how he can’t change who he is. He still has to be cautious but he’s no longer afraid of the lightning. I can’t really describe this book. It’s a little quirky with funny moments and sad moments…and seeing how determined Newton is, you really can’t help but root for him to succeed.

Editorial Reviews

?Jolted is funny and smart and fast paced. And it?s written with real love for that fascinating liminal creature called the young teenager, for whom the sky is always just about to fall.?
