Professor Otto Lidenbrock's great adventure begins by chance when a scrap of paper drops out of an ancient book he has just bought. The coded inscription reveals the existence of a passageway leading to the centre of the earth and that the entrance lies within the crater of an extinct volcano in Iceland.

The professor travels to Iceland accompanied by his nephew, Axel, a keen young geologist. Together with a Swiss guide, they descend into the bowels of the earth where an amazing prehistoric world awaits them.

Written in 1864, Journey to the Centre of the Earth established Verne as a pioneer of science fiction. This edition has been revised and improved for a modern readership.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A true classic This book is still as entertaining today as it was in its own time. It is the first work by Jules Verne that I've read so I was pleasantly surprised at how quick the plot progressed and how enjoyable/easy it was to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! Definitely a book worth checking out, I couldn't put it down! It was the first book that got me into the rest of Verne's writing and I am so glad a read it. The cover on this edition is also beautiful, though I found the colours were not as vibrant as they were on screen.

Once you start the book you will not won't to but it down. Once you read a Jules Verne you will won't to read his other books. There are many written styles to chose from any one is as good as others.
