Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpectedly Touching I had expected a more comical tale than Junji Ito's usual surrealist horror, but I hadn't expected how emotionally touching and sincere it would be, particularly when Ito and his wife detail their experiences with and after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. For a life-long cat lover, Junji Ito's Cat Diaries is a gleeful look into the messy and horrific experiences of a new and inexperienced cat owner as J-kun comes to love Yon and Mu in his own way. A pleasant surprise was the full-page colour photos of Yon and Mu that accompany the narrative. No one else could write a memoir or autobiography the way Junji Ito has, from the topic to perfect balance of comedy and horror.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Purrfect for cat loves and Ito fans! In this work you’ll find just about everything you can expected from Ito’s work. Going from the grotesque to the absurdly silly to the serious, and then ranging from the terrifying to the comedic, all this on the author’s adventure of becoming unexpectedly a cat owner. In this work showcase the purrfect example why Junji Ito is now known as a master of horror manga but with a clever comical twist. This is not a horror story. Or maybe it is – famed horror mangaka Junji Ito (Uzumaki, Gyo) has never lived with cats before his fiancée A-ko bring unexpected company to their new house—Yon, a ghastly-looking family cat, and Mu, an adorable Norwegian forest cat. If you've never lived with a cat, or even really interacted with one, which is basically Junji, that can be pretty scary – they have claws and sharp teeth, they're unpredictable, and they make weird noises, they have strange purrsonality that can change at any minutes! (God I love cats). The stuff of horror indeed and that will make any cat own laugh beyond belief ! Not only does he capture the cats' expressions and purrsonalities purrfectly, giving them a life of their own and allowing us a look at their day-to-day antics, Ito also turns the humor on himself with a slightly self-effacing style that those who have read his humorous author's notes in other works will instantly recognize. His trademark style works really well for the book, with his realistic artwork giving Yon and Mu very lifelike realism that allows us to fall in love with the cats right alongside the author. His horror art, with pointed faces full of evil teeth and eyes that are more blank white space than eyeball, serves as humor in this case, with his attempts at feline interaction coming off as utterly terrifying to the cats, while A-ko's obsessive love for her fur babies makes her look as creepy as many of us cat owners fear we do (sad reality check). If you're a cat lover, this really is a must read. Junji Ito proves just as adept at capturing life with kitties as he is at horror, and the story is by turns touching, hilarious, and heartbreaking. It may not have quite as much appeal for people who have never experienced feline life, but if you want to see the horror master prove that he can do whatever he sets his pen to, give Yon & Mu a chance. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I couldn't stop laughing The contrasting horror style drawings and story line is very funny. The mangaka drew the cats in a way that made them look realistic but still 2D. If any page was taken out of context, you wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry.
