Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just Me and My Little Brother (Little Critter) by Mercer Mayer Just Me and My Little Brother, by Mercer Mayer, is a classic story about a big brother’s first thoughts about having a new younger brother. The big brother fantasizes about all the adventures they will share together and the memories they will make. The big brother also considers what a great brother he will be to the little one. The repetition of the line “just me and my little brother” at the end of each page emphasizes the importance of the relationship they share, but it also stresses that the older brother is not excluding himself from what is important in the family. This highlights the themes in the story of sharing and camaraderie. In each of the illustrations, the older brother is doing something with the younger brother: giving, playing, exploring, celebrating. The value of their familial connection is evident, but so is the normal, expected frustrations of being an older sibling. Sometimes the older brother is shown to be sharing or being considerate without being too happy about it. This is the essence of camaraderie: being patient and selfless even when it is not easy or convenient. This is a book I remember from my own childhood, and I think this shows the interaction between older and younger siblings very accurately. I love how the illustrations create the visual of the display of affection and love that the older sibling has for his younger brother, and the frustration he sometimes feels. I would recommend this book to all kids, especially to those who are expecting a younger sibling. It is a great way for kids to see how much fun it can be to have a younger sibling, what to look forward to, and what to be aware of in terms of potential challenges.
