about

Donald Robert Hunstein was born in St. Louis, Missouri on November 19, 1928. He received a bachelor's degree in English from Washington University in St. Louis. While stationed in England with the Air Force, he bought a Leica and became interested in photography. He joined a camera club and attended classes at the Central School of Art and Design in London. Once back in the United States, he found work as an apprentice to the photographer Eugene Cook. In 1956, he was hired to help organize the photo library at Columbia Records and deal with media requests for prints. He was later made a staff photographer and eventually became the label's director of photography. He photographed Bob Dylan, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennett, Barbra Streisand, Leonard Bernstein, Miles Davis, Aretha Franklin, and Janis Joplin. He worked for Columbia Records until 1986, when the label shut down its in-house photo studio. His photographs appeared in New York: A Book of Photographs and Keeping Time: The Photography of Don Hunstein. He died from Alzheimer's disease on March 18, 2017 at the age of 88.
