about

Illustrated Chess for Children was originally published in 1970. Now renamed, updated, newly illustrated, and presented with a custom-designed chess board and full set of chess pieces, the kids' book of chess and chess set introduces kids to the game that's inspired passion and challenge for over 900 years. Fantasy art captures the energy and excitement of chess's origins-the medieval battlefield-while a direct, lively text explains the game and its pieces in light of history. Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great way to pique a young mind Out of the blue my daughter started begging me to teach her chess. Well, I love chess, but I'm a really crappy player, so I bought her two items, this one, which delves into the story behind the game and brings the game to life, and Quick Chess (see link). We play the Quick Chess version of the game for now, but it was the Kid's Book of Chess that really captured her imagination.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Kids' Book of Chess I'm so glad to see that this book is still available, as I purchased it about 12 or so years ago for my own children who were then 4 and 5 yr. old. I wanted them to learn chess, believing that it would teach them a great deal about game etiquette and social hierarchy, as well as a universally popular game that can be played on many levels. The challenge was first to learn the game myself as I'd never been interested in the roles of the various pieces on the checkered gameboard. The book's beautifully coloured illustrations and fascinating narration brought the mediaeval battlefield to life as I'd never imagined it before. Very shortly afterward, each of my kids was gleefully shouting "check!" as I scrutinized my pieces in befuddlement. Amy, by the age of 5, had taught herself to blitzkrieg, and is now, at 17, a devoted veteran of the game.
