about

There have been numerous modern English translations of Dante’s La Vita Nuova, most of which, however, are the work of scholars rather than poets. The most notable exception is Dante Gabriel Rossetti’s nineteenth–century translation.  Rossetti’s translation offers itself as a precedent for Slavitt’s translation: Slavitt renders Dante’s prosimeter into an artful combination of prose and verse, conveying something of the beauty and mystery of the original. In short, Slavitt does not ignore the poetry in La Vita Nuova, but renders Dante’s metre and rhyme in English equivalents. This translation does much to inject a fluid, lively, and engaging idiom and rhythm to a medieval text that, more often than not, is ignored by readers of The Divine Comedy.
