Yes, it's the greatest story ever told, but let's face it: It always could have used a little punching up. In Ladies and Gentlemen, The Bible!, Jonathan Goldstein brings human depth, humour, and snappier dialogue to millennia-old biblical stories. Goldstein's version of the Bible answers the questions you need to know: Wouldn't a person get bored living inside a whale? How did Joseph explain Mary's pregnancy to the guys at work? How could anyone be as dense as Samson?

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A Good Laugh This was such a fun read. Written from a slightly less exalted perspective than the original authors of the Bible, well-known stories are written from the perspective of those who supposedly lived them... The tone is not unlike a more modern verbal retelling, with quirky embellishments, feigned seriousness, sarcasm, speculation, and asides. I can almost imagine every chapter being told by the fun uncle with expressive eyebrows around family dinners. If this were a movie, it would be some strange combination of The Office and Monty Python. If you're in the mood for a little irreverence and creativity, this is the book for you.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun (thought-) provoking This book caught my eyes as I am always amazed at (and to a little degree admired) the display of courage in spiking in some fun and humour to subjects that are serious and sometimes sadly fundamentalized. "Ladies and Gentlemen The Bible" is a collection of comedies built on the rendition of well known Bible stories. Equipping biblical characters with modern thoughts and perceptions, the author presented us with a wild imagining of what those "light-hearted and modern-minded" characters would do when placed back in a "literal" interpretation of biblical settings. It's actually quite fun! And at times, it sparked new inspirations as finally we can really jump out of the box and rethink a serious subject from a relaxed angle. The disappointment being that some of the stories were a bit too over-exaggerated and dragged on for a bit more than necessary; once the fine balance was tipped, it became boring. It's a fact that any work that attempts to reinterpret generally accepted cultural, religion, or political perspectives can cause controversy. With that said, it almost includes every single view, be it spoken or non-spoken. I believe, as long as the one voicing his/her opinions comes from a place of respect, and the receiving end harbours an open and forgiving mind - the blossoming of different, or even contradicting, views is still what makes this global village fun and beautiful.
