In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, an inn owner and her shape-shifting lodger find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets.

Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others--vampires, shape-shifters, and even deadlier paranormal beings. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget....

After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns such as Vicki's don't have any distance from the Others, the dominant predators who rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what is out there watching you.

Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe--one of the shape-shifting Others--discovers a murdered man, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, ancient forces are roused by the disturbance in their domain. They have rules that must not be broken--and all the destructive powers of nature at their command.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected! I wasn't sure I'd like this as well without my favourite characters from Lakeside - but it was just great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not as great as the other books This was between a 3 and a 4 star for me but ultimately became a 4 star since I love The Others so much. I loved the little bits of the Others books that were added in but desperately wished there were more! This book was a lot more mystery and maybe a tad bit more thriller/horror than The Others series and I'm not sure I liked it. I liked Vicki but also didn't like her. I think it's because she is very similar to me and while I appreciated it I also didn't like it. I was kind of hoping she would end up with Julian but considering her current mental state I don't see that happening anytime soon. The biggest surprise for me was that the sproingers were venomous. O.O I liked seeing familiar species, The Sanguinati, the Crows, the Elders and the Elementals. But also some new ones. I don't know if I liked the changes of POV. But it was interesting. The humans in this book both gave me great hope and made me despair for humanity. Much like in the Others series. :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it!! Full disclosure: I love all of Anne Bishop's amazing series. However, the novels of The Others have stolen a special place in my heart and this book was no exception. It further develops the world our favourite characters inhabit, and takes us on an enthralling new adventure. I couldn't put it down at all, and finished it in less than a day.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book From the first page to the last I couldn't put the book down. There are not many authors out there that can hold my interest but Anne Bishop is one of them, I could picture all the characters in my mind and their dialogue sometimes cracked me up, reminds me of all cultures when they move and have to adapt to different languages and customs, great read Thanks
