For the second time in his short life, fourteen-year-old Teddy Clock has survived a massacre. Orphaned once more when his foster family is murdered, the traumatized teenager has nowhere to turn—until the Boston PD puts Detective Jane Rizzoli on the case. Jane spirits Teddy to the exclusive Evensong boarding school, a sanctuary where young victims of violent crime learn vital skills of survival. But even behind locked gates, Jane fears that Evensong’s benefactors aren’t the only ones watching. And when she learns of two other students whose pasts bear a shocking resemblance to Teddy’s, it becomes chillingly clear that a circling predator has more than one victim in mind. Joining forces with medical examiner Maura Isles, Jane races to stop an obsessed killer’s twisted quest—before an unspeakable secret dooms the children’s fate.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've read all the Rizzoli & Isles novels, and Tess Gerritsen's writing gets better with each one. This main plot line is an intriguing mystery with a great twist at the end. As well, Gerritsen advances the characters of Rizzoli & Isles, as well as the secondary characters. It's the unbeatable combination of the mystery and the recurring characters that has made me read all 10, and anxiously await number 11.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doesn't Disapoint!! With every new Gerritsen book, I eagerly await it's release. I bought this one on pre-order. Although, I have found her more recent books don't have quite the same suspense and unpredictability as her older work. I still enjoyed this one immensely, I love the on going Isles and Rizzoli relationship. "last to die" is smartly written with a wonderful level of suspense. It's hard to put down when you begin reading it. In my opinion her storytelling is nicely descriptive and she has this style that makes me feel as if I am " in" the story. I recommend this book to her fans. For new Gerritsen fans start at the beginning of the Isles and Rizzoli series" the surgeon" now that is a spectacular read.
