about

There was a time when Lauchlin MacLean was a promising welterweight boxer, a time when his heart was strong and fit, a time when he might have had a future. But instead, he stayed in his tightly knit Cape Breton community, in an island of safety where family roots run deep. Now in his 50s, Lauchlin finds his heart tested again by a beautiful blind woman, the wife of a friend—and by a dark plot for revenge born of blood spilled in the forests that surround the village.
The award-winning, bestselling author of Cape Breton Road brings us a spellbinding story of family loyalties and sexual betrayals. In Lauchlin of the Bad Heart, D. R. MacDonald combines expert pacing and sharply drawn characters with a haunting, brooding portrait of the Cape Breton

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well Worth the Read In a small town on Cape Breton Island Lauchlin MacLean spends his days running the family store, sleeping with married women, and dwelling in his past. Years ago Lauchlin was an up and coming boxer until his "bad heart" put an end to his promising career. A man with some character, Lauchlin, has never had trouble with having women, but committment to one is another story. His long standing affair with Morag has continued through the years even after she fled the island to Boston in search of a better life. Long silences between them are easily forgotton - "Yet the absences had seemed to heal them, they could still draw blindly close so quickly. Everything but the old, raw love he'd felt for her receeded." pg 93 - when Morag returns to the island a few times a year. Of all his women Lauchlin feels that Morag is the closest he will ever get to love or committment. Until, Tena the blind wife of an acquantance stumbles into his store. What follows will change the lives of many. In D.R. MacDonald's second novel he has once again brought the reader home to the rural East Coast of Canada. "Lauchlin of the Bad Heart" is both a love story, a mystery and a haunting ghost story. After all, Lauchlin MacLean is a haunted man - haunted by his past decisions, by his current decisions, and the fear of what is still to come. Born in Cape Breton MacDonald has spent most of his life in the United States teaching. He does return every summer to his land and his barn on Cape Breton Island where the people, the roots, and the land inspire him to write. At first read I put this book back on my stand. I could not follow the flow of this author and thought him to be somewhat wordy. Thankfully, I picked the novel back up after a few days and fell in love with not only Lauchlin of the Bad Heart but "Lauchlin of the Bad Heart"
