Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Visiting Japan? Required Reading If you are one of the many teachers who are lured to Japan to teach English or you want to view Japan from a small town in the country, you will find this book a must. Feiler spent a year in Sano, a rural city, where the sight of a foreigner is cause for a myriad of questions about Americans, the world, and the funny ways of those of us who love Japan but realize that we will never understand anything more than the most apparent surface of the culture. Feiler opens the "inner" country and its people to us through the educational system; a system that stresses community over individual. This book should be required reading for anyone who plans to visit Japan and wants to avoid the numerous cultural faux pas for which foreigners are renowned.
