Rated 1 out of 5 by from If Only It Were A Comedy It has been a long time since I read Left Behind, but I have one interesting memory of reading it that remains clear and is, I think, worthy of discussion. I'll get to that memory in a second, but first I must digress. I read this book for a student of mine. She was a very nice lady who came into my English class worried for everyone's souls. Left Behind was her favourite novel (her favourite book was The Bible, obviously), and she asked me to read it just after we finished Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. So I did. Now back to that memory. Early on I remember thinking, "What a brilliant book this would be if Tim LaHaye was a master of irony on the level of Jonathon Swift." Sure...nothing could save LeHaye's clunky prose, but if he conceived of Left Behind as a commentary on "fundamentalist believers" it would have been a stroke of genius approaching the level of A Modest Proposal. Then I started reading it that way, letting myself imagine the story as a brilliant commentary, and it made the otherwise execrable experience thoroughly tolerable. I knew it wasn't so, and I couldn't really force myself to "believe," but it sure was more fun. I laughed more than I might have, I giggled more than I might have, and I actually wasn't moved to throw this book in our backyard firepit when I finished. Indeed, when this piece of fundamentalist-pop-fiction kindling was over (I do have a healthy respect for spirituality, but this book was...), I eschewed the flames and dropped it on the book swap shelf of our English Department. Drop a book, take a book is the theory, but there wasn't anything there I hadn't read before, so I simply left my copy of Left Behind for some poor, unsuspecting student to stumble upon. And the next day it was gone. I wonder who took that book? Probably a member of LeHaye's choir, but I'd love for one of my colleagues to have picked it up and read it with the same guilty pleasure I did. Perhaps then I wouldn't feel so sheepish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Can't Put the Book Down! :o) To start off, I had never cared for the scare tactics that relgious leaders and zealots have used against people in the past but recently I've been interested in pursuing a bit of knowledge in that area. That led me to church and reading the Holy Bible and, with a little providence, I came across the Left Behind series. All I can say is that this is the most exciting book I have read in years! I couldn't put the book down for four days! I do admit that LaHaye and Jenkins were a little long-winded at times and there wasn't the need to reiterate the same story over and over again but I felt that the characters were compelling enough to want to see what happened. When I finished the book, I couldn't wait to go out and buy the next volume. In fact, by the time I managed to write this review - it's been 4 weeks and I am on the last 20 pages of the 5th volume. Fascinating stuff! A must read, for sure!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Compelling premise, but... The idea is a fascinating one: an event so prominent in the Christian canon tackled with 20th-century pragmatism. Very compelling. If only the writing had been better! The dialogue was overly verbose and artificial. The characters were shallow and one-dimensionally sinful (though admittedly it is the first book). But most of all, the scope was far too naïve and simplistic for a storytelling with such far-reaching goals. And a villian named Carpathia could be a James-Bond parody if it weren't waiting to be spoofed itself. Overall, a story with promise, told with mediocrity. Unfortunate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best book I've read in years!! The reason it's the best book is, that I haven't read anything in about 4 or 5 years! I couldn't have made a better choice, as I don't usually like long, drawn out stories. But for a book with several hundred pages, I began on Friday, continued saturday afternoon, and was wishing the company we had Saturday evening would leave so that I could resume reading. I finally finished it sunday evening & was totally engrossed in this enthralling story. Totally believable, if not exactly scripturally accurate! The rest of the series has been ordered through my wife's bookclub and I can't wait. PS: We've just seen the movie which has just been released as of February of 2001. Almost as good as the book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full of action! This book was difficult to put down. This book is a great beginning to the "Left Behind" series. I am now on book 3 of the 9 series by Jenkins and LaHaye. I'm anxious to read the remaining 6. This book makes you think about life, spirituality and makes you aware of what has been prophesied. I recommend this book and the rest of the series to everyone!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth It I usually don't have time to read fiction, but when I began to read this novel, I had a hard time putting it down. What a wonderful way to review the prophecies of the last days. The story captured not only my attention, but made me more sympathetic to those that think the rapture itself is fiction - they will read through this series and truly relate. I recommend highly reading through this series, and be prepared for it to make an impact on your life. For their sake, share it with others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW!!! What an excellent book and series. As a fiction novel, it is FULL of adventure and keeps you on the edge of your seat watning to know more. As a CHristian novel based on the TRUTH of God's word... it passes 100%. My walk and faith have become stronger through this series. Buy it. You'll love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MUST READ This series is the most amazing one that I have read to date. I am a bookseller and I recommend this to anyone who is reading this. My faith in the Lord has grown tremendously while reading this series and has provoked me into my own study of Bible prophecy. You become emotionally involved with the characters, as in any other series, and takes today. The difference is that it is about the end of the world as described in the Bible. THE BEST!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Are you Ready? There are a total of 6 books in this series. I have just finished reading the first two and I am well on my way in the third one (Nicolae). These books are very thought provoking and could be life changing if you want them to be. Just read the scriptures concerning end times. Albeit, they are fiction, but they seem to be biblically accurate with respect to sequence of events as recorded in scripture. For anyone wanting to read a book without wanting to put it down...these are a great series to start.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing, Amazing, Amazing I have read many books, but never one that made me think about me and my life more than this one. I have never been a religious person, but I am seriously thinking that might change. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from None left behind on the shelf This book explores the feelings and emotions that the average person would go through at a time of uncertainty to any one who is not a true follower of Christ. The authors did an excellent job developing characters who you or I might know in the real world. Whether you are a follower of Christ or not, this book will stir your emotions and make you question things that you thought that you had the answers for. Suppose the rapture of Christ's church really did happen? Would you believe it or not? This book does an excellent job of exploring such questions as these.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good, But.. When I first looked at this book I was very disappointed in seeing such wide blank margins and suddenly thought, "another ripoff Christian book, all that was missing was the popular exclamation marks !!!! and the CAPITOL LETTERS..but once I started reading, I found the story dragged a bit, but picked up quite a bit half way through. I thought the characters were a bit shallow, and the writers could have spent a bit more time on what the world conditions and reactions would be, but overall a fairly good read, enough to get me to purchase the next book, Tribulation Force, which, by the way, I found to be better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent This book is an excellent account of what we christians firmly belive will happen very soon. I hope eveyone would read it and take serious consideration about the message and reality of it

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Left Behind I picked up this book after seeing the latest in the series called Apollyon. It started out mildly enough but really got interesting. Made me want to go out and buy the 2nd book, Tribulation Force, and of course the 3rd one, Nicolae. Excellent material!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Challenge your perspective on World events I started this book with a certain amount of scepticism. I've heard a lot of talk about end times but treated the subject as a lot of hooey. After all the Bible says "no man knows the hour". I was spellbound by this book however. Not only were the events believable but I could relate with each of the characters' spiritual journeys. My faith was challenged to the point that I identified with those left behind and how they reacted when confronted with evidence of divine intervention in the human realm. I highly recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth's Last Days This was an excellent book and I recommend it to anyone! If your interesting in the End times this is a book for you! It's amazing how the Bible seems to be predicting exactly what is happening in the word now. This is a believable book! And I just couldn't put it down!

When airline pilot Captain Rayford Steele guides his 747 back down to the ground, he must come to terms with an astonishing fact — more than 100 of his passengers have vanished, leaving behind their clothes, jewelry, eye glasses, shoes and socks. Steele also discovers that his wife and 12-year-old son have vanished, but he and his college-age daughter, Chloe, have been left behind. He and Cameron "Buck" Williams, senior writer for a news weekly, now launch a frantic search for the truth. Left Behind is a story of the one cataclysm that dwarfs all others, and of faith during the world’s darkest hour.
