In a town she personifies, Ouisie Pepper wrestles with her own defiance. Desperate to become the wife and mother her husband Hap demands, Ouisie pours over a simple book about womanhood, constantly falling short, but determined to improve. Through all that self-improvement, Ouisie carries a terrible secret: she knows who killed Daisy Chance. As her children inch closer to uncovering the killer's identity and Hap's rages roar louder and become increasingly violent, Ouisie has to make a decision. Will she protect her children by telling her secret? Or will Hap's violence silence them all? Set on the backdrop of Defiance, Texas, Ouisie's journey typifies the choices we all face-whether to tell the truth about secrets and fight for the truth or bury them forever and live with the violent consequences.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A satisfying ending to the Defiance Texas Trilogy A few weeks ago, I received a review copy of Life in Defiance by Mary DeMuth. This is the third volume in the Defiance Texas Trilogy and easily Mary’s best novel to date. The novel is told from the point of view of Ouisie Pepper, battered wife, closet alcoholic, pastor’s wife. Through her eyes, we discover the truth about the murder of Daisy Chance. Through her eyes, we realize the enormous freedom that comes with truth. Although not all readers will identify with Ouisie’s situation, there is a connection that happens at a deeper level. So many women seek to please others and receive their approval; so many of us read “self-help” books of all kinds… Ousie is much more like us than we might want to admit. Life in Defiance is suspenseful, frustrating (particularly a new character named Bathsheba), sometimes troubling but always down-to-earth, in-your-face real life struggles. Mary does not hold back; she tells it like it is. There is beauty in the ugly truth she tells, beauty in the words she writes. In the end, we see the transformation of Ouisie and other members of the town of Defiance.
