They repair thither without delay, they find Jesus already some days old, and prostrating themselves before Him, they lay at His feet their presents, and worship Him. Adore, here, the unsearchable wisdom of God. The JewTs,that chosen people--the Jews, to whom Messiah had been promised, who had so long been expecting Him, who were so near to Bethlehem--point out to the Magian Kings the place of His birth, and either from fear of irritating Herod, or from the wish to flatter and to please him, not one takes a step to seek after the King of Heaven. In contrast to this we have three Magi, three Gentiles, who partly from faith in the star which guides them, partly from a recollection of Balaam's oracle, leave their houses, their wives, their children, their kingdom, without a moment's hesitation, in the depth of winter, and undertake a long journey, all the more trying from the hardships of the season. Although Herod's ambition and cruelty are well known, they boldly seek for information of the new King at his court, and they take no rest till they have delighted themselves in the presence of the King, "the desire of all nations." Here were literally fulfilled the words of Jesus Christ: "Many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.
