about

Madness, cruelty, and sexuality permeate the household in which Lilian Una Singer is raised-an upper-crust Victorian world of teacups and servants. But Lilian, shielded by layers of fat, an iron will, and an indomitable spirit, has her sights set on an education, love, and-finally-her own transcendent forms of independence.

From Our Editors

Powerfully depicting the life of protagonist Lilian Singer, from her birth in the early 1900s to her old age, Lilian’s Story is a poignant first novel by Kate Grenville. The story follows Lilian as she reaches adolescence as a fat, homely girl with a relentless lack of social grace. Feeling increasingly alienated from her family and friends and lacking prospects for marriage because of her excessive weight, Lilian enrolls as a university student. Her enrollment, however, remains brief due to a violent and horrible incident with her father that causes him to commit her to an insane asylum. This compelling narrative illuminates life in a troubled household and the power of one woman who just will not conform.
