about

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara, this #1 international best-seller tells the miraculous and triumphant story of a young man who rediscovers not only his childhood life and home...but an identity long-since left behind.

“Amazing stuff.” –The New York Post

“So incredible that sometimes it reads like a work of fiction.” –
Winnipeg Free Press (Canada)

At only five years old, Saroo Brierley got lost on a train in India. Unable to read or write or recall the name of his hometown or even his own last name, he survived alone for weeks on the rough streets of Calcutta before ultimately being transferred to an agency and adopted by a couple in Australia.

Despite his gratitude, Brierley always wondered about his origins. Eventually, with the advent of Google Earth, he had the opportunity to look for the needle in a haystack he once called home, and pore over satellite images for landmarks he might recognize or mathematical equations that might further narrow down the labyrinthine map of India. One day, after years of searching, he miraculously found what he was looking for and set off to find his family.

Lion
is a moving, poignant, and inspirational true story of survival and triumph against incredible odds. It celebrates the importance of never letting go of what drives the human spirit: hope.
When Saroo Brierley used Google Earth to find his long-lost birthplace half a world away, his story made global headlines. That story is being published in several languages around the world and is now a major motion picture from the Weinstein Company. saroobrierley.comfacebook.com/saroobrierley

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hope endures! I bought this book on a whim, without having really seen or heard much about the film - what an incredible story this young man has, an absolutely intriguing read all the way through. I may or may not watch the film so I cannot compare the two but as a book a fine example of one person's mission to find his past and what it takes.

Date published: 2017-07-12
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Was a pretty good read I did enjoy this book, however, I don't seem to be as thrilled about it as the other reviewers. It is magnificent to read about the experiences of someone who went through such an extraordinary life. The story is great and I was really captivated for the first two thirds, but I really felt that the end was quite dragged on. I still would recommend to a friend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing An inspirational story of how a lost son begins a heartfelt, hard journey of searching for his biological mother.
Date published: 2017-05-29
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic I managed to do the opposite of what should usually be done - see the movie before reading the book. In this sense, it helped me visualize what Saroo was writing about and also prepared me for the emotional reunions and accounts. I fell in love with the movie and the book is equally as powerful and miraculous.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Book Very good read, I wanted to see the movie but after reading the book, I no longer feel that I have to see the movie.
Date published: 2017-05-23
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautifully Moving This is an inspirational book that tells the story of a man who never forgot where he came from and wanted answers. Saroo was grateful for his connection with his new family in Australia, but wanted to find those old connections in India, his connection to his biological mother and siblings. It's also a story that brought the awareness and that shows the dangers of children in India and brought attention to the fact that over 8 thousand children go missing in India every year. It's a beautiful story of never giving up, that you can find what you're looking for, and that miracles exist.

Date published: 2017-04-24
Rated 3 out of 5 by from An Easy Read Although the story in itself is remarkable, once-in-a-life time account of a child's unthinkable hardships in being separated from his family, this was an easy read and surprisingly, a little boring. Maybe the hype of it held my expectations too high.
Date published: 2017-04-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A triumph Written as a memoir, this starts as a heart breaking story. It is easy to read, but gripping in detail and you can feel the frustration he experiences in his journey. Ultimately, you also share in his joy and it'll make you a bit misty eyed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved it! Amazing story of courage and determination. Beautifully expresses the human need to know " who we are and where we come from". Great respect for the adoptive parents compassion towards a son determined to find his birth family.
Date published: 2017-01-27
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting story What Saroo Brierley went through was amazing. That he managed to survive and find his family against all odds 25 years later is incredible. However, the book is not very well written, and quite repetitive. I feel there was a lot of info and relationships that was left out (for example, more about his adoptive brother and father). But what an amazing journey he has been on

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Inspiring Memoirs are not my typical read but this was selected for book club. This was truly a remarkable story. How one little boy lost on the streets of India, hundreds of kilometers from home, with a lot of luck, ends up adopted by an Australian couple. Flash forward two decades and with the advent of technology and Google Earth and against all odds in a country of 1 billion people, is able to find his way home again. An amazing life story, proving that sometimes, you just have to hope against hope that things will work out. Definitely want to check out the movie now!
