Looking Backward is an alternative future novel written in 1887 and taking place in a utopian Boston, Massachusetts in the year 2000. It follows the character Julian West, a young man who falls asleep for 130 years, waking in the far future where socialist values have supplanted capitalist society, and guided, Virgil-like, by one Doctor Leete.

The most famous book by novelist Edward Bellamy, Looking Backward captured the imagination of the age and spawned innumerable societies dedicated to the actualization of the book’s ideas, a preponderance of criticisms and literary back-and-forth in the form of unofficial sequels and other novelized responses, and continues to be influential in speculative fiction and social philosophy to this day.
