JAB Member Katie Hillman's Q&A with Darren Shan author of Lord Loss It's in the Blood

1. You're definitely a fan of the macabre. What books and/or movies of the horror genre have inspired your work? Do you have any favourites?

One of the biggest influences on me was "Salem's Lot" by Stephen King. I saw the TV movie of it when I was 9 or 10 years old. It blew me away!!! Then I read the book a few years later and became an instant King fan for life!!

2. What's your method for writing a story? Do you have any "creative rituals?"

Once I have the rough plot fairly clear inside my head, I write out a plot outline by hand, then usually break it down into chapters. Then I start writing, direct to PC. I write 10 pages a day, 5 days a week, when doing a first draft, which normally takes 3 or 4 weeks. I'll then spend on average two years working on the editing process!!!

3. Do you have any tips for an aspiring horror writer? (cough cough…) Is it difficult to create a name for yourself in this field?

Just write the sort of stories which you would like to read. Don't worry about impressing other people - write for yourself. Getting published for the first time is always hard. You just have to keep writing and keep believing in yourself - everyone gets turned down to begin with!!

4. Have you always wanted to be an author (particularly, a horror author)? Have you always liked to create creepy stories?

Yes, ever since I was 5 or 6 years old. I actually mix up genres - horror, fantasy, adventure, mystery, sci-fi. But I've always had a special love for the dark side!

5. Now a standard question; if you could meet anyone, living, deceased, or fictional, who would it be?

I'd love to meet Stephen King, since he's been such a huge influence on my life - though I imagine I'd come across like a real fan-boy, so it might prove rather embarrassing for me!!!!!

Praise for Lord Loss"Utterly unputdownable" - the TIMES"The master of children's horror at his blood-curdling best." - PUBLISHING NEWSPraise for Darren ShanLord of the Shadows"Stephen King for kids . Darren Shan has brought his own brand of vampire mythology into the heads and hearts of thousands of children with his vivid and compelling series The Saga of Darren Shan, about one boy's journey from ordinary lad to vampire prince. Once they're hooked, kids tend to rip into the flesh of these books, quickly draining them of their life blood. The covers, with images of ghouls, creeping hands and dripping fangs are terrifying alone. I love the way you manage to juggle the funny with the unpleasant, the affection with the hurt. It's great story-telling." - Roddy Doyle
