Rated 5 out of 5 by from A CLASSIC THIS CLASSIC BOOK TELLS THE STORY OF A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO ARE BROUGHT TO A UTOPIAN SOCIETY. TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES RECENTLY SHOWED A NEW RESTORED VERSION OF THE 1937 FILM THAT WAS CONSIDERABLY LONGER WITH SCENES THAT WERE NOT IN THE ORIGINAL THAT WAS RELEASED TO THEATERS. SEEING THIS MADE ME WANT TO READ THE NOVEL. WRITTEN BEFORE WWII THIS NOVEL SHOWS THE DESIRE FOR A PEACEFUL SOCIETY FREE FROM THE HORRORS OF THE WARS THAT WERE OCCURRING IN THE 1930'S. READ BOTH THIS BOOK AND TRY TO WATCH THE RESTORED VERSION OF THE FILM FOR A GREAT EXPERIENCE. .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Still a Classic! Hard to believe that this book written over 80 years ago reads like it was written just yesterday. The 1937 film adaptation inspired me to write the original novel. The mountain utopia of Shangri-La, peaceful and isolated from the rest of the war weary world serves as a reference to feelings that many Americans harboured following the horrors of the First World War, the Great Depression and the gathering forces of totalitarianism in Europe.
