In his debut novel, YouTube personality and author of We Should Hang Out Sometime Josh Sundquist explores the nature of love, trust, and romantic attraction.

On his first day at a new school, blind sixteen-year-old Will Porter accidentally groped a girl on the stairs, sat on another student in the cafeteria, and somehow drove a classmate to tears. High school can only go up from here, right?

As Will starts to find his footing, he develops a crush on a charming, quiet girl named Cecily. Then an unprecedented opportunity arises: an experimental surgery that could give Will eyesight for the first time in his life. But learning to see is more difficult than Will ever imagined, and he soon discovers that the sighted world has been keeping secrets. It turns out Cecily doesn't meet traditional definitions of beauty--in fact, everything he'd heard about her appearance was a lie engineered by their so-called friends to get the two of them together. Does it matter what Cecily looks like? No, not really. But then why does Will feel so betrayed?

Told with humor and breathtaking poignancy, Love and First Sight is a story about how we related to each other and the world around us.

Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good book, but it could have been better. Will was born blind. He’s never been able to see, and for him it’s sometimes frustrating when people try to describe things in relation to other things because he’s never seen anything. But he’s decided he’s had enough at going to a school for the visually impaired, and now he’s in a regular high school for the first time. It’s there that Will meets Cecily, a girl who finds a way to describe things in ways that make sense to Will, and someone he quickly begins to fall for. Then, thanks to an experimental surgery, Will gets eyesight for the first time, and he has to relearn everything he’s ever learned from a new perspective. One of the first things he learns: Cecily’s appearance is not as it was described to him. Her appearance doesn’t matter to Will, but why does he still feel betrayed? I’m so torn over my thoughts on this book. On the one hand, I really liked it. It’s a cute story and I really like Will and Cecily’s characters. Plus Will’s new eyesight and how he sees things initially and has to relearn everything is really well written. On the other hand, I felt like the ending was really rushed. This is not a long book, and I feel like it could have been made a little longer in order to draw out the ending a bit more. Note: I received an advanced reader copy of this book from Indigo Books & Music Inc. in exchange for an honest review. I am an Indigo employee.
