Customer Reviews of Love Medicine: Newly Revised Edition

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Family Matters Louise Erdrich: Love Medicine This is the newly revised edition of the book, originally published in 1993, copyrighted in 1984. Why is it important? Because the book consists of short stories, which were published in various magazines and periodicals in the Western US. Therefore, it is Erdrich’s first book, and I think it is the best of all of them. The short stories (or should I say “long short stories”) deal with two or three families in the reservation of Indians and mixed race people in North Dakota. Each story is concerned with one of the characters, and as we read on, and time passes, we feel that we have lived amongst them, have learned their names, seen their fate, met their parents and children, and are privy to the rumors, fortunes and misfortunes in their lives. Erdrich is a writer of short prose, the passion of her style may not be sustainable in long prose. (Her prima facie long novels impressed me less). But the way how she was able to make a narrative of the complicated relations, as they unfolded over the years, is amazing. A beautiful book, interesting reading, and reminder that love medicine can also be bitter, but always powerful.
