about

Charged with sensuality and passion, Pablo Neruda's love poems are the most celebrated of the Nobel Prize winner's oeuvre, captivating readers with earthbound images and reveling in a fiery re-imagining of the world. Mostly written on the island paradise of Capri (the idyllic setting of the Oscar-winning movie Il Postino), Love Poems embraces the seascapes surrounding the poet and his love Matilde Urrutia, their waves and shores saturated with a new, yearning eroticism.

And when you appear
all the rivers sound
in my body, bells
shake the sky,
and a hymn fills the world.
        © 1973 by Neruda & Walsh
Pablo Neruda was born in 1904 in the town of Parral in Chile. He received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including the International Peace Prize in 1950, the Lenin Peace Prize and the Stalin Peace Prize in 1953. In 1971, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Two years later he died of leukemia in Santiago, Chile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous Since this is such a small book you could travel with it everywhere; which you should. Pablo Neruda's works have so much life to them that you can clearly see and feel the imagery as he writes. Definate buy for anyone looking for a small foray into poetry books.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More... more... Please!!! This is a deceptively slim volume of the late poet's work... but it contains several pieces of his sublime work. I can actually read most of the Spanish and understand it... I also read each piece in English and find the two are very compatible... I discovered Pablo Neruda through shares on Facebook; on YouTube you can find some things being read by Neruda... but to hold these poems in your hands in such a beautiful little volume is exquisite!!! I highly recommend this volume for a gift... I gave it for Valentines Day... but do NOT forget yourself... order two!!! I'd love to collect all this poet's work... hope we get more offered to us...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh. My. Goodness. Pablo Neruda's Love Poems is a short, small book of poems and odes that allows the reader to choose whether or not they would like to follow the writings in english, or Neruda's native Spanish. I picked this little gem up by chance and was blown away--my goodness, the turn of phrase, the prose, his lyrical voice--even translated--took my breath away. His are some of the most passionate, and at times plaintive, words I've ever read. It is an outstandingly beautiful collection I would be loath to ever give up. I would especially recommend this to someone looking for readings at a wedding--the love Neruda held for his partner is evident in every syllable.

“One of the greatest major poets of the twentieth century. ()”

“It is difficult to find an analogue for the sustained passion and gentleness communicated in this absolutely stunning apotheosis of the poetry of sexual love....Matilde Urrutia deserves to enter history in the company of Petrarch’s Laura and Dante’s Beatrice.()”
