about

Sixth grade is coming to an end, and so is life as Macy McMillan knows it. Already a "For Sale" sign mars the front lawn of her beloved house. Soon her mother will upend their perfect little family, adding a stepfather and six-year-old twin stepsisters. To add insult to injury, what is Macy's final sixth grade assignment? A genealogy project. Well, she'll put it off - just like those wedding centerpieces she's supposed to be making.Just when Macy's mother ought to be understanding, she sends Macy next door to help eighty six-year-old Iris Gillan, who is also getting ready to move - in her case into an assisted living facility. Iris can't pack a single box on her own and, worse, she doesn't know sign language. How is Macy supposed to understand her? But Iris has stories to tell, and she isn't going to let Macy's deafness stop her. Soon, through notes and books and cookies, a friendship grows. And this friendship, odd and unexpected, may be just what Macy needs to face the changes in her life.Shari Green, author of Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles, writes this summer story with the lightest touch, spinning Macy out of her old story and into a new one full of warmth and promise for the future.
Shari Green spent a large portion of her childhood summers reading stacks of library books, and she's still in love with stories today. In 2016 she published Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles, a stirring middle-grade novel in free verse. Shari lives in Campbell River, British Columbia, with her husband, kids, and the worst watchdog e...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent middle-grade book Macy McMillan is a lovely little girl, who is deaf. She faces some tough life-changing challenges in her very near future. She loves her home but it has a huge For Sale Sign on the front lawn due to the fact that her mom is getting re-married. They will be moving out to live with a brand new step-dad and his two rambunctious six-year-old twin girls. Her sixth grade school year is terminating and she and her best friend Olivia have had a huge blow-up. Her teacher, Mr. Tanaka, has assigned as their last project one requesting the students track their genealogy. She is majorly stressed out about that too. What genealogy? How can she possibly cope with all these changes in her location? her emotions? and especially her relationships? Oh my!!!! Her mother sees her procrastination in packing and making the wedding centre pieces she agreed to create, so she volunteers Macy to help out eighty-six-old Iris Gillan who lives next door. Iris also is experiencing a drastic shift in her lifestyle due to an early diagnosis of dementia. She will soon be relocating into an assisted living facility. Really now... how much can one girl take? Iris is unable to pack up her home herself and unfortunately cannot communicate with Macy due to the fact that she doesn't know sign language. How is that going to work out? Well you might be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. This heartwarming story unfolds a beautiful bond between the elder "rainbow goddess" and the younger "seeker of comfort". With each encounter: the passing of personal stories, copious notes written to each other, sorting through shelves of books that need tending to and best of all Iris's yummy cookies to share, a very close and special friendship blossoms between the two. The book is written beautifully in free verse and the characters are well developed. Will Macy learn some important life lessons and finally belong to the cohesive, loving family that her heart so longs for? I highly recommend this book. The author's previous book, "Root Beer Candy and Other Miracles" is worthy of checking out also.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A sweet story about the pain of change and how friendship and love helps us weather it First things first: Shari Green is a fantastic writer. The way the words and images roll through the story are inspiring. And this story, about a young deaf girl whose life is changing thanks to her mother's decision to marry, is heartwarming and heartbreaking all at once. But the real gem here is Macy's relationship with her next-door-neighbour, a once vivacious woman who is soon to leave her home thanks to a diagnosis of early dementia. The relationship between Macy and Iris is real and true and wonderful, and fir me, makes this book not just good, but great. This would be a wonderful addition to every school library and curriculum. I'm not going to lie - I sobbed at the end! Loved Macy so much!

Macy McMillan and the Rainbow Goddess is a message from the writing goddesses that everyone's life is just a story or series of stories that need to be told to be fully appreciated but no worries here because one of their scribes, Shari Green, has taken on that task capably and, like Iris, with wholehearted extravagance. - CanLit for LittleCanadians - 20170515
