Madame Boniface, the pretty wife of a confectioner, serves behind the counter, and attracts, among other customers, the Count Annibal, who falls in love with her. Her husband, detecting this infatuation, is so worried by it that he makes blunders in the manufacture of his candies, giving them the wrong essences and burning them so, that the customers bring them back daily and demand the return of their money. This loss is comp-nested for by the Count who gives extravagant orders for confections for an excuse to visit the she On him all this spoiled stock is palmed off. Annibal's uncle, Vieille reche, a retired army emeer. Ein anxious to marry him 03, brings to Paris his young ward, Isabelle, fresh from a convent, determine that the wedding shall take lace right away. Boniface is preparin to send his wife away secretly to Orleans to reside a while with er uncle to et her away from the in uence of Annibal, when the latter's uncle, hunting for his nephew's new resi ence, arrives and leaves the young girl in the candy shop in charge of Boniface. They are followed to Paris by a young artist, Fridolin, who, while restoring the aintings on the ceiling of the convent chapel, has seen Isabelle at her rayers and has fallen in love wit her. Isabelle is locked in a room back of the shop, but through a bu l'a eye in the door sees the antics of her intended with the mistress of the candy shap, and forms the resolution of going to Annibal'e house with Boniface when he goes to deliver the purchased cand y, in order that she may learn something of the life of the man she is to marry. When the carriage comes to take Madame Boniface away the Count bribes the coachmsn and, taking his place, drives of! With her.
