about

Mike Houle is a college all-star second baseman in his junior year when he turns down a fourth-round draft pick offer from the Montreal Expos. He'll finish his business degree and try his luck again next year. But Mike's final year in college sees his performance take a downward slide, and his big league dreams are going the way of his stats. When Mike's agent offers him a chance to play in the Cornbelt League in Iowa, Mike can't refuse. He can even handle the isolation of living in Grand Mound once he learns he's a cinch to start at second base.

Sure enough, Mike's never played better than on the Grand Mound Greenshirts, and he even begins to fall for the town's charms, including a certain Tracy Ellen Powell. That is, until he starts to suspect that when the good citizens of Grand Mound lure young men into their town, they have more on their minds than just baseball ...

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Timeless Baseball Prose From the opening pages you enter the life of a character similar to your own, one who is struggling to conquer his demons and make a success of himself. As the story unfolds, each character becomes more and more intriguing as their small Iowa town seems too good to be true. Our hero has entered a place where his demons are no longer a curse but merely a minor nuisance that be overcome in a blink of ones eye. As he begins questioning his surroundings, the truth becomes painfully clear. His eden is merely a stage where the lives of the newcomers are pre-destined by those before him. Should he give up this baseball player's nirvana, or leave to face his demons on life's real stage. Magic Time is a book that will grip you in such a way that you won't even realize that the minutes have passed and you are almost finished. Once you have finished it, you will begin your search for other W.P. Kinsella books that are written in the same easy going narrative manner.

From Our Editors

W. P. Kinsella is the best-selling Canadian writer of such contemporary classics as Shoeless Joe and Dance Me Outside. Magic Time returns to Kinsella's favourite theme, baseball, with the story of Mike Houle. He's a college all-star player whose career is sliding - until his agent offers him a gig with the Cornbelt League in Iowa. Things turn around for Mike in the green fields of Grand Mound, only there seems to be more to this odd little town and extraordinary baseball team than meets the eye. This is vintage Kinsella: humorous, enchanting fiction.
