A typical active solar system can be used for radiant heating, domestic hot water, heating swimming pools and countless industrial uses. They often use a rooftop collector to concentrate solar energy, a liquid medium to absorb and transfer heat, and various pumps and simple controllers move the heated liquid.

These systems have remarkable utility, even in many relatively cool regions. Some of the tests cited were conducted at Air Force installations in Washington State!

Useful to anyone looking to build a low cost DIY solar collection system, it includes typical installations and "rules of thumb". It explains in fairly simple language, the science and construction of an active solar hearing system.

This book is a US Military manual, while it is not intended as a reference for designing a system, there is a great deal of discussion about design and fabrication characteristics.
