Ambrose Young was beautiful. The kind of beautiful that graced the covers of romance novels, and Fern Taylor would know. She'd been reading them since she was thirteen. But maybe because he was so beautiful he was never someone Fern thought she could have . . . until he wasn't beautiful anymore.

Making Faces is the story of a small town where five young men go off to war, and only one comes back. It is the story of loss. Collective loss, individual loss, loss of beauty, loss of life, loss of identity. It is the tale of one girl's love for a broken boy, and a wounded warrior's love for an unremarkable girl. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Beautiful Cover for a Beautiful Story I can't rave enough about this book. I recommend this to anyone who is ready to be engrossed in a story and is not afraid to feel joy, pain and loss right along with the characters. I shed many a tear while reading this book so I really have to hand it to the author for being able to pull me into caring for the characters. I do want to point out that this is not even remotely a retelling of Beauty and the Beast so if you picked it up specifically for that reason, you will be disappointed. This is no way diminishes the quality of this story though so please don't let that deter you. I don't even know what else to say other than to read this story!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RETELLING This is such a lovely retelling of Beauty and the Beast. It's the kind of love story that just slowly grows and you get to watch every wonderful and ugly part of it become a part of Fern and Ambrose. It's a wonderful story of love and loss and most importantly, the ability to fight even your inner demons to find happiness when you think you've lost it all.
