In 1987, when Russell West is nine years old, he steals a mysterious cocoon from his grandmother's home lab. His grandmother, Lilian, who was a pioneering organ transplant scientist in a Chicago hospital, dies soon after. Russell panics when the cocoon hatches one night. He witnesses a hideous creature coming out - and flushes it down the toilet. Twenty-five years later, Russell, now thirty-five, his wife Gina and their two daughters return to Chicago from Wisconsin. Russell has a new job as a columnist at the Chicago Tribune. A public works employee calls the Tribune about the monster he's seen in the city sewer. Russell's colleagues think the guy is a nut job, but Russell is curious and wants to hear more - secretly worried the monster is the thing he set free.
