The New York Times bestselling author of Elizabeth I brilliantly reimagines the story of the most mysterious woman in the Bible.

Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute, a female divinity figure, a church leader, or all of those? Biblical references to her are tantalizingly brief, but we do know that she was the first person to whom the risen Christ appeared—and the one commissioned to tell others the good news, earning her the ancient honorific, "Apostle to the Apostles."

Today, Mary continues to spark controversy, curiosity, and veneration. In a vivid re-creation of Mary Magdalene's life story, Margaret George convincingly captures this renowned woman's voice as she moves from girlhood to womanhood, becomes part of the circle of disciples, and comes to grips with the divine.

While grounded in biblical scholarship and secular research, Mary, Called Magdalene ultimately transcends both history and fiction to become a “diary of a soul.”

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eye-Opener! George is able to mix research and fiction together to create a counter- story of a woman who is traditionally viewed as the "prostitute". George gives Mary Magdalene a voice that we have not heard before. I would consider this a re-claiming of Mary in all senses of the word.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing! I am a big fan of margaret george and this is one of her best novels yet! It was an amazing, fast-paced, emotional read that eveyone interested in historical fiction should read. Ms.George conveys how difficult if would have been for a woman to live in biblical times and is a book that shows how making a sacrifice to stand for what you believe in can truly change your life. Although the size of the book may seem daunting, I finished it under a week. Within the book you really connect with the characters and feel thier joys, sufferings and pain. If you're worried this will offend your faith in no way will it, it is actually very accurate to the bible. This is an absoltely amazing and is something I highly recommend, esecially for females.
